Clutch issues?

Recommended Posts

So I bought a 2001 R50 a couple weeks ago and everything seemed insanely straight on this truck despite being 25 years old....except the clutch. First weekend we had it the wife and I decided to mess around on one of the old logging roads nearby and we had a blast! A few days after that I noticed some slippage in 4th when accelerating to merging speed and shortly after in 5th, so I babied it home. Same thing the next couple days, just 4th and 5th though. Started looking into different clutches and what all it would take to get it swapped out. Then all this week no slippage. Started kinda trying to replicate the issue and it just hooks every time, accelerating, decelerating, uphill or down. So I pulled some experience from my Integra days and gave it  slight aggression. And it just wouldn't slip....

My thoughts

Clutch is starting to go but still performs from time to time

Possible rear main leak (she's got just a little residue starting on the bottom rear of the motor) got on the flywheel causing slippage

Possible water intrusion from above mentioned logging road

Sorry for the long post but I'm a mechanic myself and I prefer lots of details! 😅

Did the seller give you any idea when the clutch was last replaced?  That would give you a bit a a clue, although some people are better with clutches than others.

I had talked to him about that and he thinks it was done sometime in the last 30k. And yeah I was worried his grandfather may have gotten a little sloppy with older age. It actually slipped 2nd thru 5th today after running some errands before work. I realized the pedal was all the way at the top of the travel and we adjusted it a bit at the shop. Didn't slip once on the way home so we will see. Im a bit worried it was constantly riding the throwout bearing despite no pedal pressure.
