Vg30e to Vg33 ER help

Recommended Posts

Howdy all,

I have a 1993 Nissan pathfinder 4x4 that I’ve had for a couple months, long story short a few months ago I was driving to a concert and the water pump blew and the engine overheated 2 hours into the drive. It now was a warped connecting rod. I’ve tried sourcing a good engine up near me and had no luck except a vg33er out of a 2004 xterra. I’m aware there is some accessories I’d want to swap over and some I’d want to keep, the one thing that is terrifying me right now is wiring, the vg33 I’m pulling out of a junkyard so I’m keeping track of that harness, I can’t find any information regarding the wiring except for changing the ecu from a vg30 being changed to fit a vg33er.

any help would be greatly appreciated, especially being that I have to drive this car 6 hours back up to school again in 2 weeks.

the real question is, what needs to change? Can I keep the current wiring harness and swap the ecu? Do I have to swap both the wiring harness and ecu?

You want to use all the VG30E fuel injection stuff. Mr.510 used to make an adapter for the crank so you could run your VG30 accessories on the VG33 but that will likely not work if you want to use the blower off of the ER. Unfortunately while many people have done it, this won't be a quick weekend project to drive back after the holidays, unless you're super mechanically inclined, then I might be mistaken.

If you're having trouble finding an engine have you checked car-part.com? The VG30E was in the early 90s maxima, quest/villager van, and D21 pickup as well.

The "easy" way would be use the VG33ER block, heads and accessories, and use the VG30 intake/fuel delivery, that way you won't hafta do any ECU swaps.

Keep the VG30 heads for down the road (supposedly they have better cam profiles?) and keep the supercharger and intake stuff for later.

The main catch is, the a/c compressor for the VG33 has different plumbing and won't match with your WD21 tubing so you would have to have them cut and brazed/tig welded to the VG33 tubing.
