Gotta pull the pan

Well, after removing the auto tranny to replace it, I found a pretty good leak that I thought was coming from the rear main. I replaced the rear main, but there is still some oil seepage from around the rear oil pan seal. Guess the pan is going to have to come off so I can reseal it. Anyone else ever had to remove the pan? I'm wondering if I can get away with just lifting the motor a few inches. The FSM says to remove the suspension crossmember, as well as the front diff. Ugh. Not looking forward to this at all. :(

I pulled mine but I had to remove the diff and crossmember. Couldn't get the pan completely off without doing that. If you feel lucky and are just lookign to reseal it, hike up the engine and lower the pan. You may get an inch or two gap. If you're a contortionist and you have the thing up in the air so you can move around under it, you may be able to scrape out the old gasket and lay in a new bead of high-temp RTV. I would then pour the old oil back through from the heads to the drain plyg to make sure you fluch out any bits of gasket you may have gotten inside the pan. After all is said and done, if it is sealed, you're golden. If it leaks, you're back to pulling it completely off (diff and support) and you're just out some elbow-grease and a $3 tube of RTV.

I removed mine twice off of my '90 without removing anything. There is one bolt on the back side that is hard to get at, but with gentle tapping I managed to wedge a small 1/4" socket between the cross member and the pan. I then had to pry my Y pipe down with a long pry to fit the pan out. It's a biatch, but it can be done.

Well, the tranny and y pipe were already out due to my need to replace my autotranny. I decided to just pull the motor, since I was already 3/4 of the way there after doing my timing belt. That will give me a chance to replace the exhaust manifold studs so I don't have to worry about those. I went ahead and ordered some Thorley headers while I was at it. Sure hope those comments that they fit the automatics okay are right! lol

Thanks for the replies!

Let me know. I have an AT also (95) and I know from others that the pacesetter headers won't fit. The dudes at Thorley said that the ones listed for the MT would work on the AT. Actually, they really said that they have received responses that the headers for the MT have worked on the AT. I'm guessing that they aren't ready to make that as a claim. Anyway.... let me know if it works out-of-the-box or what mods you needed to make. I'm still looking to ditch my manifolds.

I'm still looking to ditch my manifolds.

That makes two of us.

Of course they're about #24 on the list of things I need to do to my Pathy, but hey, knowledge is power. Would be good to know how well the headers fit on a AT.

BAHAHAHAHA Well, props to Summit. They listed on their website that the Thorleys wouldn't ship out until June 11. I called Summit and asked if they could drop ship directly from Thorley. That was last Saturday. The guy at Summit said he would call Thorley on Monday to see if they had any in stock. I figured he would forget to call, but low and behold, I had a package from Summit at my door YESTERDAY!!! SWEET! Anyway, it will probably be a few weeks before I get the Pathy back together, but I'll be sure to post my findings on the Thorleys with the AT transmission. Us poor AT guys need some aftermarket love too. lol
