Guest GeordieMuppet
I've got a bit of a noisy rear spare tire carrier on my 92. From bouncing around and pulling on it alot I'm pretty sure that the noise is coming from the hinge area. This problem started as ratteling when we were off road and has progressed to rattling on uneven road surface. I'm not a great mechanic but willing to have a go to fix the problem, any advice from anyone would be appriciated. I'd prefer to keep the tire rack where it is rather than remove it as we're planning to use the car to road trip to South America early next year so space inside the vehicle is at a premium. Precise1
This was fairly covered in a post, try the searching function. If you can't find it, it was mainly replacing the pins (and bushings I believe, or maybe that was door hinge pins) with a lot of grease... Not to difficult, but the carrier is heavy so be careful. Hopefully others will chime in and or redirect you. It's not a terrible job from what I understand. B
jj big shoe
A cheap and easy "fix" is to cut a small, thick piece of rubber hose and wedge it in the hinge between the carrier and the mounting bracket. When you close the carrier, the rubber hose will press against it and compensate for the slop in the bushings. I did it on mine and now I could jump a railroad crossing without any rattling. If you cut the hose to the right length, it won't pop out of the hinge bracket when you open and shut the carrier either. Let me know and I'll post a pick if you need more info. Guest GeordieMuppet
Thanks for the tips guys, I'll get on that today... then think about the much bigger job of replacing all of the exhaust brackets and infact the whole exhaust Its worth it, this thing has been great off road so far. Guest GeordieMuppet
Fixed ... did the nut check and confirmed everything was nice and firm, and them crammed a piece of cut rubber hose into the gap between the carrier and the supports.... oh my god silence is golden!!! well except for my exhaust bouncing off my frame (Soon to be fixed), nothing at all from the carrier. Cheers for the tips guys its much appriciated.
