I'm thinking it won't be long before I'll have to replace the old '96 and I'm actively searching for the right 2001-2004 R50 . What I can't seem to find is the "how to" that Hawairish posted on retrofitting my rear tire carrier to the newer model . Am I blind or does it seem that all forums only go back 3 pages now ?

Instead of retrofiting. Find one of them rare 01-02 that have one.

No, seriously though, here in the states the rear carrier was lost by the mid-01 model year. There are very few 99.5-01's out there with a rear tire carrier and I'm willing to bet that IF you find one it'll have the vg33.

In the 17 years I've had my '96 , I think I've seen maybe 5-6 others with a carrier .

All were '96-'98's . Pretty rare around here it seems .
