Guest Fuchfaccio
My 88 Pathfinder won't start, but only sometimes, usually when it's real cold. For example, today was -20celsius or so and I turn the key and I hear a click under the hood but it won't turn over. If I turn the key back and forth (off to start to off to start and so on) it will eventually start at least so far it has. I'm really affrad of it leaving me stranded though, not that a Nissan would do that, I've had this Pathy for2 years and has never left me stuck. Does the Path have a starter coil or is it built in. or do I need a new starter? I should point out that there is a suspicious wire (thick white one) that goes straight from the battery to god knows where, I can't really tell, and it's too friggin' cold to investigate further. But it doesn't exactly look stock. Thank a million for any suggestions.
Guest Fuchfaccio
oops, I forgot to mention I have a brand new battery, and when it does turn over it turns over fast and starts fine. So that part is O.K. thanks, Mike
GrimGreg
Could be the brushes in the starter are worn out.
87mudfinder
It is definately the starter or solonoid. Replace it before it dies completely and dayum its a bezzzatch to replace and not cheap either.
