Auto Transmission Pan Removal

1995 auto 4WD. I tried to remove the transmission pan and couldn't clear the exhaust where it crosses under. Is it necessary to remove the forward exhaust pipe to be able to remove the transmission pan? Would removing the exhaust heat shields only provide enough clearance?

Thanks, don't want to go to that trouble.

I read the post 'Transmission Fluid Leak.... on WD21 Forums at DamagedReality.com

I will just replace the gasket.

Do you recommend sealant? Is so, should it be applied to each side of the gasket?
