Weird Noise

hey guys! I went off roading last thurday and then again on friday. Thursday was good, did the trail, no problems, no sounds, everything was good. Friday the same...no sounds no nothing weird but yesterday the pathy started to make a weird grinding like sound...Im not even sure if grinding is the correct word but I think its the best description. The sounds happens only when im in complete stop or moving 0-10 mph. Sometimes it doesn't makes it other times is very loud. I think its coming from somewhere near the tranny or the transfer but I'm not really sure. 4wd is applying just fine, transmission is working great. I've heard the sound before on a 2wd Cherokee Sport. I dont know maybe water in the tranny or transfer? Heck I have no idea. I know its not the bearings nor the hubs...help? lol

I've had vines wrapped around my CV's from tooling around in my woods that made weird noises. Have you crawled under your rig to check for any thing like that? Shoot, I've even had a small rock get caught up in my disk break assembly that fskcd up my rotor before. Just shooting some ideas before you go looking at internal parts.

Everything its pretty clean down there, anything that could've gotten stuck possibly came off after the two and a half hour highway drive I made yesterday...

Do what makes it grind next to a cement wall or something that will reflect the noise, it should help a lot in narrowing down where it comes from. Have a buddy try to locate the noise when you drive by. A visual inspection and locating the noise are the first step in figuring it out. Don't worry yet, it may be trivial...

Yesterday had no noise, today it came back, it's coming from near the transfer and transmission shifter, it makes some kind of vibration...i don;t know if I shold worry or not lol... maybe I'll take it to my mechanic and see what he says. Thanks for the suggestions guys!

  • 1 month later...

sorry I took so long to reply, been very busy. I can't stop laughing since I discovered the source of the noise, turns out it was the exhaust pipe knocking against another steel bar near it. So I took an old radiator hose, cut it from one side a placed it around the exhaust pipe, no more sound. Lol.
