timing belt tensioner - FSM wrong?

Putting my VG30E (1991) engine back together, and having some problems following the instructions in the dealer manual. I have read the timing belt threads (two of them anyway) and they don't follow the procedure, just "make it tight" more or less. The problem is that the procedure seems to always want you to turn the tensioner clockwise, and eventually the spring just pops off the stud. Maybe they meant counterclockwise at some point?

I'd have to go back and look at the photos, but the two threads method works well, even if it is not to procedure; one of them was written by a Nissan/Infinity master mechanic. Are you sure you have the tensioner spring set up correctly??

I'm going to go take another crack this afternoon (truck is in a friend's garage). But I think I do have it on there right. Basically you just want the "prong" of the spring pointing "up" such that it can rest against the top side of the stud. Otherwise it would be resting against some part of the oil pump or something.

 

I guess the reason I posted here though, is that I'm trying to make sure that if I do follow the "thread method" that I have things on there right. I'll take some pics later if I can't figure it out.

Well, I got it put back together. I think the FSM should say counter-clockwise at one point instead of clockwise and it all works. Odd.
