rpm gauge dies

So My rpm gauge dies while running, I let it sit for awhile and it works again? It's fine for a few weeks and then it happens again. Has this happened to anybody else? Any ideas on what I should fix it?

IIRC From what I've read, the stock gauge cluster in these trucks seem to have issues and can just pooch right out after a while

Picking up a used gauge cluster out of a wrecker is the most cost effective repair

Another option is to get an after market tach-- they're REALLY easy to hook up

the Canadian Tire #22 Nascar and crew were at our shop the whole day today

If my cluster starts to go, I think I'm going to rip the whole thing out and fab up something like what they had

 

I may be wrong, but I -think- those gauges are Equus 8000 series, I wasn't really paying attention at the time xD

this happened in my 87...i narrowed it down to the connector on the distributor...sometimes if i fiddled with it it wouldnt do its freakshow dance (just bounce all over the place and sometimes just flatline at 0) for months at a time...mine started after i did a top end rebuild
