i have an 89 pathfinder with a vg30i and 5 speed it recently lost the timming belt tensioner it didnt break while driving but did jump one tooth on one cam and lost power i put a new belt and tensioner on it and it had lots of power it sat a few days while i was out of town and when i drove it to the store i killed it and when i went to start it it was tapping i killed it started it a few minutes later it tapped a few seconds and died then no compression i towed it home and pulled the timing covers back off timming was good now it set for a few days and when i cranked on it today it had compression again im a deisel tech and this is my first nissan any help would be appreciated

Sounds like she has PMS... some midol and a nap would be best.

 

No, but in all honesty - how can it lose compression, then get it back without anything being done?

there's a possibility that you bent a valve causing it to not seal properly giving you a very low compression reading. Stuck lifter will do the same thing I believe. I've been running on 5 cylinders for the past 3 years now. lots of tapping.

Agreed, it sounds lifter related, that is usually the tap upon start up. Why it died, I have no idea. I recommend doing a compression test on all cylinders to get a baseline.
