Taoism Posted April 16, 2009 Share Posted April 16, 2009 I have the front end of my 91 all apart to fix some deceleration trauma caused by a deer the previous owner encountered, followed by a fence. I figured while everything is apart (replacing rad support) I should be safe and do the timing belt/idler. After some reading on here I also decided to do the water pump. So my question is how reliable are the oil pumps in these things? (engine has 150k on it) Should I replace it as well? If the pumps were not so spendy I would just do it, but money is tight for me. Also, other than going through the hassle of removing it to pack it with grease, how can I prime the oil pump before I fire this thing up? (It sat in a field for an unknown period of time before I acquired it for $300, so no residual pressure I am sure) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I also wouldn't worry about priming the pump.....if anything, do an oil change, and add some lucas oil stabilizer. Get the old crappy oil out, and some fresh stuff in. I saw a buick once that kept having issues because you were supposed to turn over the engine bakwards after installing the pump to prime it. WTF!? lame design.
