Newbie Transmission Question

Ok, so I'm new to the Pathy world.... well I had an 89 back in the day but I'm new to the forum and yes... I tried the search feature. I just picked up a 91 SE with a broken auto trans, I found a cheap 3-speed auto trans that is "rebuilt" - cheap being about $100 but I also found a 93 XE with an auto and 113k and a rusted frame (new tires and brakes though, runs good) for $750. From my searching I believe either trans will fit, but what will be the mpg impact of not having the OD on the highway?? How much are these engines worth in good running condition??.. if I can recoup some of my money it might be worth having the parts car around.

Thanks for any help in advance! Once I get the pathy cleaned up I'll snap some pics and post in the new member area.

The 3 speed only came on the first year model and I believe it bolts up fine. Your tranny controler probably wouldn't be the same though and I think there is some other difference IIRC. There was a thread about this recently... Also, 'rebuilds' vary greatly and often do not last with these trannys.

If you have the means to get the other truck and store it, it would be a good way to go. Swap in the tranny, grab what ever parts you want (injectors, coil, starter, alt, etc...), mix and match the best parts of each, sell the motor, part out what else you can and you are in good shape. IIFC.

A JDM engine with all that bolts on the block goes for $500-$750. You should be able to sell that one for $300-$500 depending. Honestly, you could probably part out the entire truck for more than the $750 asking price...

Thanks for the advice Precise1, I went and looked at the parts truck and decided it wasn't worth the investment. I actually don't think we would have been able to tow it home, I stuck my hand through the frame it was so rusted. I guess I'll be scavenging junk yards for the next few weeks...

^ like he said. Bolts in and that's about it. Thanks for the clarification.

You may still want to look for donor trucks, it would be the most cost effective in the long run. Look for blown motor donors, some people let their timing belt service slip, literally...

I don't know what you prefer, but swapping in a manual tranny from a donor truck (all parts from petal assembly, console, MC, etc) is not much more difficult. Perhaps that is a viable option for you?

Good luck and we'll help if we can...
