Hello All,

I love my pathy but after a recent mudding excursion my alternator got mud in it which caused me to break down at about 1 in the morning :angry: ...I do'nt know why the alternator is mounted so low in the first place but does anybody know anything that would help protect it or anybody have any ideas on what i could do to avoid this besides staying out of the mud, lol....

Thanks

you could get an aftermarket bolt on that has an externally located voltage regulator, which would allow you to mount it higher in the engine compartment ... but that still does nothing to protect windings and bearings in the alternator from damage ...;

as I am sure lots more will tell you, the only way to protect it, is to keep it away from the mud ...

After muddin', blow through the biggest puddles you can find. That'll help rinse (so to speak) your undercarriage. The engine compartment gets a bit spotted but at least the clumps aren't there. Alternatively, a quick spray with the hose will help too but that's much less fun.

If you want to do a swap, I think I've read a post somewhere that talks about using a Nissan Quest/Mercury Villager (Same vehicle different name) alternator as a subsstitute. I think the reason behind it is that it's a little more covered and has a higher amperage rating. Pretty sure it's a bolt on deal. Might be something to look into.
