drmayer
Hi all- My first post here. I am looking at a 2002 pathfinder that is for sale at a local lot near me. It has 82,000 miles and looks to be in great shape. I took it for a short drive today and i plan on taking it home tomorrow for an overnight test drive. Is there anything specific i should be aware of? I've been browsing some of the posts to get some ideas. Thanks for the replies. Dave
vengeful
The 2002s are great, depending on which 4WD system it has. If it's got the knob, it's OK, if it's got the lever, it's fantastic. Check out these threads linked below, if you haven't already to find out some important information to ask the dealership selling the vehicle. http://www.nissanpathfinders.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=14826 http://www.nissanpathfinders.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=7052 http://www.nissanpathfinders.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=19941 http://www.nissanpathfinders.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=19903 The last one is specifically geared at a 1997 model, but 99% of the advice given applies to the 2002 as well. The only differences you'll find between the two years are the engine/4WD system and some styling differences. The rear suspension was redesigned in 1999 for the 2000 model year, and is more robust and easier to service. Be sure you get the VIN and call the local dealerships to check for service records, and open recalls/TSBs.
drmayer
thanks for the info. It has the knob with the auto 4x4. Will be used a lot in snow, so i think that will be a good thing. I am going to take a good look at the rear suspension bushings tonight and run the vin when i have it home tonight. Trancebear
Doing a Carfax report is worth the $20. I did one on a Pathy before I bought my current one and found out it had frame damage at one time. They are worth every penny!

It does have certain limitations off-road, and for certain modifications, like manual locking hubs. However, if you learn the nuances of the system, how it works, and why, then you will have no issues with it. The Automatic 4WD feature is nice in snowy conditions where the road conditions vary greatly from treated to untreated roads. In heavy snow, you will still want to use 4-Hi. BowTied
I have an 02 LE and it is great. I did the power valve screw thing and it was more time consuming than difficult (see my write up). Let me know if you have any specific questions. Kingman
My aunt has an '02, she bought it new and travels all across the country with it. It's got 186k on it now, runs like a champ! Routine maintenance, plus o2 sensors is all she's had to do to it. Good truck really, comfortable, and reliable. She loves it to death!
