Pingin' Pathy

2001 Pathfinder 3.5, automatic. 172,000 miles. When accelerating at a moderate rate, the engine pings (detonation) quite severely. At first I thought it might be bad gas, but have since put through a couple of tanks of premium, from different stations, and no improvement.

It hasn't thrown any codes. This is definitely a pinging sound, as in pre-ignition, not a mechanical noise like lifters, or anything like that.

Any thoughts?

Cheers!

good question. The problem sounds to me like a timing or vacuum advance issue. perhaps the ecu has a screw or something that will alter the timing. I'll have to pull up my caR50 FSM and take a look
