  1. Given that there is no distributor, how does one check / set the timing on these?
  2. 2001 Pathfinder 3.5, automatic. 172,000 miles. When accelerating at a moderate rate, the engine pings (detonation) quite severely. At first I thought it might be bad gas, but have since put through a couple of tanks of premium, from different stations, and no improvement. It hasn't thrown any codes. This is definitely a pinging sound, as in pre-ignition, not a mechanical noise like lifters, or anything like that. Any thoughts? Cheers!
