Inspection time

standard things to check are brake pads, tire tread depth, marker lights, leaks on shocks or struts (wipe them down then dust with dirt before inspection. instant 'no leaks'). If you have emissions testing, there's not much you can check beforehand. If it's running smoothly, you're probably OK. Look for any excessive play in your tie-rod ends, c-link or ball joints. shops love to hit you for those and, unless they are obviously loose, it's impossible for them to really say they're out of spec (but they're the ones with the sticker, right?)

 

Bottom line is to make it clear to them that you do all your own work so just check it and list what doesn't pass and the measurements that they made to determine it (you can check the spec in the FSM). I had a pep-boys tell me that my rotors were too thin. I checked them and they were well within spec. turns out their software/database listed the max thickness spec as the minimum allowable. I carried in the FSM and showed them that they were wrong. Got my sticker.

Well I looked it over and it may need brake pads but I'll probably buy them so he can put it on. I did some things to make it more legal like covered up the roof lights and I got the stock fender flares on. I don't have very big mud flaps in the rear but they're bigger than the stock ones. It all should be good. The SES light is on but there's no bulb. I know it's the EGR code due to exhaust cause it had holes in it but I just put a whole new setup on that's close to stock specs as far as piping size. Besides brake pads, maybe wiper blades, I should be good to go.

reset your SES light. the emissions test equip will read the code and fail the test. Pads are easy to put on... consider taking the 15 minutes to do it yuourself rather than have the shop charge you for it. If you have any questions about how, just post. I do mine, my neighbors, my parents, etc. Alternatively, if you plan to be in the philly area in teh enxt couple weeks, pm me and we'll hookup and do them quick.

He looked over it and said the code wasn't for the exhaust it was for some wire missing so I got that fixed and there was another code. He fixed that and told me I had to drive it over the weekend to make sure it doesn't come back on and it just did today. I got some P1400 code about emissions. What should I do? Tell him to look at it or what? Can I clear it without a scanner cause autozone won't do it and nor wil advance auto cause it's against the law apparently to them now to clear codes.

 

I don't wanna spend more on diag cause it's like 48 an hour. Can he tell if I just clear them before going in but how?

I picked up a cheap OBD II scanner at harbor freight for 30-some dollars. Problem with just clearing before taking it in is that it will probably come on during the test. The P1400 code says you have a faulty EGR solenoid valve. If you got some other code in the 1400 range, post what it is or check this table:
