Muffler heat shield, vital?

As I noted in my Northwest states post, I recently departed company with the heat shield on my muffler. Do you think it gets hot enough to cause me problems down the road? (Like some others with burning carpets...)

 

If not I'll probably just let it go, but I don't want my backseat a-smokin'

 

Plus the fiancee has been lecturing me about getting a new exhaust (she's swell)

 

Whaddaya think? Leave it be for now or opt for new pipes from the cat-back since I can't afford an entire system?

i got rid of mine..... i have a complete new system on mini, and king is running his redneck rigged system until i can get him in the shop in a couple weeks. neither truck has shields.
