88 Pathfinder Distributor Problem

Recommended Posts

I'm new to the forum so sorry if I somehow screw this up.

I have an 88 Pathfinder V6 that is making a loud rattling noise from the distributor. It rattles so badly sometimes that the set screw will pop off the rotor. I've tried replacing the cap and rotor but it made no difference. I've also tried putting a new distributor in but out of the 3 I've tried none will go in all the way. They all stop about half an inch from locking in. Could this be an internal engine problem? Any help at all is greatly appreciated.

Welcome...

When you pulled the cap could you see any obstructions down inside? when you change your oil are there a lot of filings? I'm not familiar with any problems like that but it seems like it could be a bad gear or something to that effect...I'm sure someone else will come along with a better response...
