105,000 mile tune up

When i bought my pathy the dealer told me i should have it serviced @ 105,000 miles. I just called to schedule the tune up and they told me that it would be $880 that is crazy. what has to be done and what should i really have a mechanic do?

105,000 miles is when the timing belt on a 3.3L engine should be changed, but since you have the 3.5L fortunately you don't have that to worry about. You need to find out exactly what services are performed for $880. All too often, it's basically an oil change and a series of inspections that can be done yourself if your eyes work and you have a list of things to check.

 

At that mileage, I would be doing the following things:

oil/filter change

new air filter

new spark plugs

new distributor cap/rotor

new spark plug wires

tranny fluid change

front/rear diff fluid change

brake fluid flush/bleed

coolant flush

rotate tires

inspect accessory belts (replace if cracked)

inspect brake front pads and rear brake shoes (replace pads or shoes if they're almost gone)

 

There's probably more that needs to be checked, but basically you really need to know when the last time that major service was done to determine if it's worth it to do a "105000 mile service". It makes little sense if you've recently had any of the above services performed.

 

But again, you need to find out exactly what's covered in that $880 fee. If I had to guess, it won't include much of what's described above, in which case you should have the service performed at a reputable independent reasonably-priced auto repair facility.

Having the 3.5, you can even take 2 things off that! You have a coil on plug, so just buy good plugs! So, hell yeah $880 is crazy! I might be tempted to add (if you are spending the $$) new O2 sensors for the exhaust manifolds (there are 2 sensors there) and a coolant temp sensor.
