Kittamaru
Yea yeah, laugh it up. My pathy went thru a rather large puddle tonight at a decent speed... water splashed up all over the truck and I think up thru the underbelly. I didn't see the thing so I hit it at about 30-35 mph... now her idle is all messed up and she stutters when trying to accelerate. Places I can think of water could get into/affect the engine: Spark Plugs / Wires / Distributor Rotor Alternator / Battery Vacuum System Air Intake Oil? Throttle Body? All I know is she was running great... hit the puddle... water went everywhere, and now she's sputtering a lot... idle is real rough. She didn't and doesn't stall... but... with the weather as cold as it is, I'm honestly concerned. Last thing I need is water freezing inside the engine... and I know that if water is in the cylinders it cannot be compressed and can really muck up your engine. Any ideas? Also, how would I go about removing said water? Would SeaFoam do the trick?
jj big shoe
Good news is that if she's running you don't have to worry about water in the cylinders. You've already coughed it out and turned the rest to steam out the tailpipe. You may have knocked a plug wire loose if you hit the puddle hard enough (I've seen hoods buckle on rally cars from puddles) so you may want to spray some WD40 on them and make sure they're tight. I'd spray under the dist cap as well and poke around the connectors on your wiring harness.
Kittamaru
Should I disconnect them and do this, then wait for it to dry? Or can I do it, reattach them, and drive? Thing is, I need to pick up my fiance in about 15 mins
unccpathfinder
moisutre under the dizzy cap would be possible...when I used to go wheeling when I was 16 several times I ingested mud into the intake and I'm sure the dizzy cap got soaked and it would run like ass for about 20 mins or so then by the time I got halfway home she was running fine doh just read the last of JJ's post...so yea just check all of that stuff...and you may have a soaked airfilter which restricts air in
unccpathfinder
how far do you have to drive? depending on the distance if it runs drive it...don't pull out in front of anyone and take it easy and you should be alright until you can check it out tomorrow Edited February 2, 2008 by unccpathfinder
Kittamaru
BTW - can I have a quick piccy of where you mean on the wiring harness? I've never buggered around with that before *blushes a bit* No idea what, or where, it is
unccpathfinder
the connectors are all over the engine bay...
Kittamaru
they're the plastic coated things then? The coloured ones? Sorry, the terminology is throwing me off a bit
unccpathfinder
most of the connectors are grey...the dizzy cap is the distributor cap (its where all your spark plug wires connect to and it also connect to the coil) I'm looking for pictures now... Kittamaru
I know what the dizzy is just wasn't sure on the wiring harness things
unccpathfinder
I dont really have any that are clear...but what I would do with your time frame... pull the distributor cap (make sure not to disconnect any wires) and make sure its dry under there...then make sure all the plug wires are seated on the cap and plugs...pull the air filter out and see if its dry if its soaked run inside and dry it out real quick with a blow dryer or just go with it it'll dry with time ...if the filter is soaked you could try cranking the truck with it out to see if the idle is better but remember your running the risk of sucking debris into the engine...I really think you're fine its just got some wetness somewhere it doesnt like it... unccpathfinder
good luck...and yea I have a pair of snap-on "grippers" that are awesome for the long plug wires we have b/c I have done just what you said and pulled out the black parts and the metal grabber stayed on the plug ruining my wires... NaturaTek
Dude, I'm not a expert, but here are my takes, from my own pathy experience. First experience: After nearly two months owning my pathy, my cousin decided to clean my engine, cough. He sprayed 'spray9', all over the freaking engine, then took a gas powered water pressure cleaner, and pressured rinse the whole engine. I turned the pathy on, and noticed engine was stuttering, like moving side to side feeling, causing the front that shaking feel. I was like what the F. I started driving home, and everytime I stopped at a red light, that whole pathy shaking side to side was annoying. Felt like you was driving a old arse put-put mobile. Called him up and he told me that was normal, that I had a 'misfire' under the distributor cap, and should go away once dry. But DAMN, that shaking in the front engine didnt go away until like 4-5 days later. The beginning was the intense shaking, and as every day went by, it slowly started going away until it completely vanished. Second Experience: One time, a few blocks away from home, I saw a little puddle on a side drive thru of Wendys. That very instant I wanted to play wannabe 4x4 tonka man, so I cut thru the lot and went thru the small water puddle about 20mph. While yelling out the dukes of hazzard 'yeehaw', water splashed up to the sides high enough where it was near top edge of drivers window. Was a quick 6 second splash or less. Anyway continuing driving home, I noticed it was sluggish..I could press the gas down and it wouldnt go no more than 25-30mph. I was like wtf. Drove around for a few mins to see if it would go away. Still sluggy. Then remembering what happened with the home made engine cleaning cousin did, I attributed to water being the cause, and I guess I would have to wait till it dries out. Next day, it was all fine. Reading thru some posts here that night, it seem a few ppl had that problem and mentioned it was a loose cable connected to spark plugs or just old. I never checked but I need to replace all plugs and wires soon. Perhaps its a water issue, if you don't get rid of it in, give it a day or two and see if it subsides. I actually was pissed off that night going thru that puddle. I see all these photos of pathys basically immersed in water and a quick splash thru a 2inch water puddle halted my pathy wtf. Kittamaru
I'm thinking perhaps it's time for me to replace the dizzy + plugs and wires? Given they're... 18 years old...
