Tranny problem!

My auto transmission just stopped working, no forward, or reverse is it completely gone or is there hope? it just went out when I was driving about 30mph. any help advice would be great, Thanks.

checked fluid level, viscosity, color, smell?

fluid lvl is good and the viscosity is fine, the guy before me was running synthetic in it. but the way that it just quit working make me think that it might be some thing other than that. no smells year is 1988

Check to make sure the shift linkage didn't fall off the transmission?

Well, that's certainly strange...

 

yes, check the shift linkage first... uhm... make sure your 4WD shifter isn't in neutral by accident (hey, worth a check) also try going down to 1 instead of drive and see if it makes her work... may also be worth trying the 4WD and 4WDL sets to see if you can get anything out of her.

The transmission control computer may have died, or the connector may have come off the transmission...

 

Usually, though, the transmission dies and has to be replaced. They usually give some warning ahead of time, though. Mine did, it started slipping in OD, then 3rd, then it lost those two entirely.
