N6VMO
Parked my '87 PF for abouyt 30 minutes. Came back and it failed to start, no relay clicks, no headlights, no tail or interior lights, no power at all. Battery is brand new and charged, verified this with voltmeter. My Ham radio, which is powered directly off the battery functions fine. Everything else electrical will not power on. Checked fuses and they were all good. Reseated relays in engine compartment and under dash. No help. Cleaned the already pritine battery terminals, no help. Checked for loose connectors, found none. To humor myself, I tried to have it jump started, same symtoms, turn key and no power. Called AAA and waited for 90 minutes for them to arrive. Before putting it on the AAA truck, I tried one last time to start it and it came to life. So, now I have a very intermittant problem to try and troubleshoot. I can not trust my normally trustworthy PF until I can solve this problem. Anyone had this happen to them? Any suggestions? I do have a Chiltons manual and have been looking for probable causes in the schematics. Hmmm...Saftey Relay??? Thanks,
88pathoffroad
Check your fusible links on the battery's positive post. The main fuse panel link at the battery may be loose or corroded, making intermittent contact.
N6VMO
Check your fusible links on the battery's positive post. The main fuse panel link at the battery may be loose or corroded, making intermittent contact. That is what was causing my problem, the battery fusilbe link. I found it corroded and broken down near the bottom of the battery tray. I measured voltage at the fuse panel and found only 2.3 volts, while the battery measured 12.6 volts. Re-terminating the fusible link, installed a terminal block on the fender wall and prepped battery/fuse cable. The PF came back to life. Thanks 88pathoffroad. This site is great. 88pathoffroad
Cool beans, man. Glad to help! At least you didn't have to go to a shop and get charged big bucks to fix it.
