Hey guys after pulling the harmonic balancer I noticed that theres some hole in the back of it which I guess lines up with the hole on the crankshaft gear cover in the bottom. Is there like a spring in there? I didnt really pay attention when I pulled the harmonic balancer off

Your questions and arrows confuse me...

 

Picture 1) The five holes are where they removed metal to balance the balancer. The inner ring of six threaded holes in the web are to mount the pulley. The slot in the center hole is for the woodruff key to slide into.

 

Picture 2) The upper arrow is pointing at the woodruff key that indexes the harmonic balancer and keeps it from rotating on the crank.

The lower arrow is pointing at a hole where on of the belt cover bolts should be.

 

No springs involved in this area...

 

Any of that help to answer the question?

Another question is, Is there a trick pulling out the crankshaft gear so I can replace the crank seal? Would it hurt it i I pry on it a little so I can get enough room behind it to use like a bearing puller? I tried to pry on it earlier but it doesnt look like its moving at all,Its just bending the thin plate behind it. It illustrates on chiltons manual to use a couple of flathead screwdriver on both sides and slowly ease it away from the engine block to give enough room for the pullers teeth to grab on to.

 

Id rather learn a trick from you guys :D

It is likely on there pretty tight, and may have a touch of corrosion.

Use the normal techniques - get some PB Blaster in there and let it soak a day or two. Then heat up the gear with a propane torch to expand it. Then pry while someone else taps on the face with a steel hammer to break corrosion up.

I just D&T into the sprocket then use a puller, faster and easier.

This is one of those rare case of "It aint broke dont fix it" :D

 

They sure make it sound so easy on chiltons manual :angry: this is another reason why i dont go by any manual and rather get some advice from you guys whos actually done this probably a few times. I have a chiltons here and only looked through it once for pic.

 

That pic that i took is from a junkyard motor that I took the tbelt off. One thing I learned is and I think this was mentioned here before is label all the bolts thats coming off the belt cover.They have different lenghts.

 

another thing that confused the heck out of me before is the 5 o'clock setting on the tensioner that some of you guys were talking about and after seeing the belt tensioner allen adjustment it cleared things up

and the notch on the crankshaft gear .I was looking for a mark and couldnt find till I wiped some of the crude from the gear and noticed the indentation or divet,Now that I know where its at ,do i mark the crankcase where the green arrow is pointing to?

Ive walked out the crankshaft gear with the tow screwdrivers a lot of times. Yoiu have to get behind it and that may bend that little plate a little. You can flatten it when you get it out. Just walk it back and fourth at opposite angles. Otherwise, penetrant and heat will be needed.
