playingotter
 Ok Folks. I know this is a familiar thread, however endulge me for a moment as I just a newbie. The reverse went out on my 95 Pathfinder automatic transmission(what else is new?) I took it to a shop and the fellow test drove it and ran through some upshift and downshift. He said, based on what it did and did not do that it was most likely the sprag (reversesprag?) or the reverse clutch pack. In short a rebuild. I got the Chilton/Hanes manual but it is a little vague on the pulling details. I have two questions; 1: Do you really have to remove the torsion bars( and if so ,completely?), and why. 2: I could not figure out how to get to the torque converter bolts, but that part was answered while searching the posts (thank you). What is not clear to me is that they say to remove a 'plate' for better access to the bolts. What 'plate' is it ? Is it the 1/16" piece of metal sandwiched between the block and the bell housing? If so, how do you remove it? Remove all the bell housing bolts, shimmy the tranny and free it so it comes out? Answeres to these long winded questions would be greatly, GREATLY appreciated. Any othe words of wisdom would also be welcome. Any links to get a shop manual, and are they more detailed? - :help:
hmrepairs
Yeah, the "plate" does give you a little more room if you remove it. There are a couple of mounting brackets at the back of the engine block, and the bolts for those go through the plate. Seems like maybe one or two bolts on each side, then the plate will slide down and out, with the brackets still in place. Also, I removed the torsion bars on mine (93) just to give me a little more room. Don't know if I had to or not, but there's enough other crap in the way, I'll get rid of whatever I can to make the job easier. Good luck
