transmission gasket PIA

3M makes a gasket "softener" for the professional auto repair market, but it can be tricky to find. Try brake cleaner?

I usually resort to razor blades and extreme care - the blade will cut right into the aluminum if you hold it too upright.

thanks for the suggestions mws and 88blk4x4. i'll look for that 3m stuff next time. there was some sort of chemical gasket remover at pepboys, but they were out of it. so now i'm using the paint scraper (a mesh of bristles of some sort) attachment on my makita (suggested on another site). that's doing pretty good so far. still a PITA, but much easier than scraping with a screwdriver, but at least i'm almost done.

this is my first transmission fluid change, and as usual, the hardest part is something i hadn't even thought of as being an issue.

it probably had permatex on it is why it's so hard to get off....to make it easier to remove, I use copper spray gasket and then put the gasket on top of that and then I give it another coat before I put the pan back up...I use it on rubber and cork gaskets.....

i think i noticed that copper spray gasket at the auto store, but i bought some High-Temp Red RTV Silicone Gasket Maker - what do you think of that? Will that work?

Ooops, just noticed it's the Permatex brand you mentioned.

I'll probably just use it since i've already got all the old gasket off and i wont need to do this again for 30k or so (and i put less than 7k a year on my cars).

the red stuff will work good also.....the permatex stuff I was talking about is more like super glue for gaskets....short of an act of congress, it's hard to remove..lol...the rtv silicone is alot better...it can be blue or red...the only difference is the red is for higher temps
