'93 auto tranny problems

Hello All,

My transmission just started acting up. When I put the shifter into reverse, the backup lights come on but it doesn't go into reverse. If I play with the shifter in between park and reverse I can get it to go. It does take some playing. Once it's in reverse, I move the shifter to the reverse detent and it works fine. Maybe an adjustment? Any ideas?

you might get lucky and find out that it is the linkage, but I doubt it. I believe that reverse is the first to go on these notoriously hot trannys, someone correct me if I'm wrong please.

When I lost reverse on mine it just went out completly.

You may just need to adjust the linkage like govols74n was saying.

 

If I were you I'd start looking for a new/used tranny and a shop with a good rep if you can't do the work yourself just in case it is the tranny.

 

Anyone hear of a good shift kit (link to one would be great) that might fix this type of auto tranny situation, or is the only good solution swapping a 5speed in?

Mine is a 94.

 

Yesterday it began being hard to shift from 1st to 2nd, even at ~3000 rpms it doesn't shift, if I depress harder the pedal it seems it goes into power mode and doesn't shift at ~4000rpms. :sniff:

No problem with shifting from 2nd to 3rd and so on, and reverse is ok.

Indeed, it shifts from 1st to 2nd, but takes a loooong time to do so.

More, if running downhill, I found there's no problem shifting 1st-2nd.

 

I found a trick to force the shifting, when it gets near 2800-3000rpm, I release the pedal for a while and then depress it again, then it shifts 1st to 2nd.

 

AT fluid seems fine. Power light comes up for 2 seconds like first check procedure from service manual, so it seems to be ok. I tried the next procedure but I guess I did something in the wrong order, 'cause no lights blinked at all, and the manual says it would blink anyway...

There is a shift kit available, yes. It's supposed to fix slippage and lockup problems by increasing line pressure. TransGo makes one. Search for: "RE4R01A shift kit".

yup. aaron is right. dave was lookin at em for my 91 pathy (that's auto)..... bein as he rebuilds trannys... but i figure i actually have to DRIVE the stinkin thing on the road to find out if i actually want to KEEP it yet and the tranny was only used 6 months after rebuild before truck was sitting.

i think northern automotive also make rebuild/shift kits for them.. i think that's where dave found mine
