HI..

I have a 88 pathy that the trans went out in and I bought a 91 pathy for parts. The 91 needs rod bearings, how hard is it to replace them? or would it need a total rebuild. it had about 240k on the odo...

I was going to take the trans out and put in the 88, but the 91 is in better shape, so I let the 88 go back to the car lot where I got from.....any advice would be greatly appreciated....thanks, Charles

while ure that far into it u might as well do a complete rebuild b/c if u need to machine any of the blook its got to be completly taken apart...or should be...and i would rather do it right the 1st time then have to go back a 2nd and blow the $ and time

not really... u can pull it put it on an engine stand flip her over pull thean oil pan and cradle and if u know which 1 it is u could replace it and throw it back together but i dont think its worth it esp if it flattened or ovaled anything else out...

True. It'd be real bottom-heavy tipped upside down with the heads on and no crank in it tho, wouldn't it?  ;)

um, thats why you work on the motor on the stand upside down, or im i just not understanding any of this

oh, i guess when you go to flip it back over to put it back in?\

if thats the case then you need to spend some time at the gym if you and a few buddys cant flip it back over long enough to throw a bolt in the engine stand

sorry if that sounds dumb but i dont see that as a problem

If a VG30E needs rod bearings it needs other things also. The crank is going to need work and the wrist pins are probably worn. At 240K miles either the wear is going to be next to nothing or complete all around. Rod bearing do wear out, but unless they loose lube the VG30E should go to 350K or 400K before wear is a problem. Long before the bearings have a problem the rings have a problem in this motor. Now if the bearings did loose lube then a COMPLETE overhaul is necessary. Don't fool yourself into believing you can replace only the bearings and everything else will be ok for a long time.

I was just being a little sarcastic. No seriousness intended. ;)
