The 2001 Path SE Tire Question (Again ..)
tkpath replied to tkpath's topic in 96-2004 R50 Pathfinders
Thanks for the note on the Mich's. That's what I've been hearing on them. Way, way better than the OMEs but maybe not the all around capability of the Bridge ATs. -
The 2001 Path SE Tire Question (Again ..)
tkpath replied to tkpath's topic in 96-2004 R50 Pathfinders
If I want to go to the Dueler AT Revos and not flunk the 'tire conversion test' (something about diameter and brake failure) on most tire websites, I think I'm looking at: 245/70/16 or 255/70/16 .. as I plan to use these tires year round in the WDC area, any thoughts as between those two tire sizes? -
The 2001 Path SE Tire Question (Again ..)

I did check those DJ. Not as many Pathy responses as I would like .. so, here I am! -
The 2001 Path SE Tire Question (Again ..)
tkpath replied to tkpath's topic in 96-2004 R50 Pathfinders
I will use these tires year round .. sorry about the confusion. Had ATs in the past and there were great around here (WDC). I'll check the clearance wrt the strut. I seem to recall others trying this 'upgrade' and reporting no problems but I'll check nonetheless. There just are not many preferable (to me) tires available in stock size. Thanks for the replies so far. -
Stock 2001 Path SE with manual trans. Has Bridgestone Dueler HT (scary in winter/wet) 255/65/16. Time to replace. Want the Dueler AT or AT Revo OR the Mich LTX M/S. Questions: 1. I know it's been asked but can I, without any further mods to car, put 265/70/16s on? 2. Bridge AT Revo v. Mich LTX .. any thoughts. THANKS

It's true, ain't it. I love my tools but boy was I glad when that off the shelf silicon spray did its thing. I recall changing the window motors out on a Pontiac once. You'd think a green beret outfit was called in to design the door so that you couldn't possibly get to the motors without sacrificing life or limb (or digit) .. literally. Thanks ACE Hardware!

Yup . the stuff is intermittent here and there's usually someone on your tail so you need to keep moving. I think the Pathy issue for me is that it's just a little more rev happy with a stick than other truck type things I've driven .. plus weight distribution/current tires all amount to a nonfun drive. All great ideas on this thread however .. I'm sure things will improve.
-
Runnerman .. I should finally give in and start using the 'smilies' .. all my comments totally in jest. Thanks for the tip .. can't wait to use it. Now .. any transmission spray available? ...........
-
Thank you everyone for your responses and suggestions. I'll keep the tank filled, maybe not max out tire pressure, add a little weight to the back and drive a lot this year so I can get a set of dueler a/t's next year. Good to know I'm not crazy .. just a poor winter driver.

Spray? That's it? A simple, anyone can do, inexpensive repair to a 10,000 part machine? What about all of our tools? Our epoxy-floored garage? Our weekends' with no football? Our top dog status? What are we going to do with all of that?? No way man! I'm ripping the doors off, missing the special night out with the wife, smashing my fingers, scaring the dog, leaving grease stains on every glass, plate, bowl and portable phone I leave stacked on the roof of the Pathy .. because I want everyone to be happy, dammit. Because only we know, it ain't that simple.
-
Herm, if I inspect the front struts, what am I looking for?
-
That's a good point on the gas Herm. How much does a tank weigh? 20 gallons at ...Just a sec, I'll check the interent (I should know this having once been an AF pilot) ok around 6lbs so .. 120 lbs. That's a big diff between full and empty. Since that doesn't make a big difference, you'd probably need a lot more than 100 pounds to make a discernible difference. Hmmmmm. And god help you if it ever shifts. I'm thinking new tires and a lighter foot .. hard in a manual trans sometimes. Like I said, I've owned other SUVs .. but the Path, although a nice car, definitely loves to pivot.
-
Herm, I do notice the end-swapping 'capabilities' of the car. And I agree that driving technique makes a big difference. What luck would I have adding some weight in the cargo area .. If you think it would be useful .. how much would make a different (couple of 50 lb bags of sand)??
-
Herm (and all) .. I agree, don't think it's a grease issue .. design error if nothing else. Shifter .. I can live with it. Just seems a little too prone given I did not think it was all that cold. But the whine . you bet, big issue. The dealer supposedly replaced the bearings last month under warranty but the car gained a new vibration while running as well as the 'whining' sound. I told them I'm coming back. Does not look good.
-
I'm sure this is a decent off road car .. but the cold wx aspects of it are a little odd. I have the window go-slow issue as well and it's 'only' in the high teens. I really don't want to take the door apart. Easier to move to Florida I think. Another cold aspect is my tranny (manual). The whine coming from that thing and the sluggish aspect of the stick when the temp gets below 30 or so at night is odd if not a little scary. Probably will wander back to dealer for the 'whine.' The car's not mine.
-
Thanks everyone. Checking/lowering the tire pressure is a good suggestion. I may throw a couple of bags of sand in the back for the winter (weight) as well. For those of you using Revos .. will those fit on stock rims? I noted some use Rock Crawler rims but I would like to stay with what I've got. (isn't this fun, in a few months, I'll be complaining about highway traction and noise).
-
Trialsin26 (there are 25 others?): Thanks. Are you and SE or LE? What size A/Ts do you have .. and are those stock rims? I had a hard time finding A/Ts (that a tire deal would put on) when I looked in 03. I found it funny that so many A/T tires would not 'fit' the Path .. given that it's advertised as an off road truck. Could be that's all the dealer had but I do recall Tire Rack having a very limited choice in that type of tire for the Path SE/stock.
-
Ok EDTA.. what tires did you get that kept you firmly planted? Thanks for the reply ...
-
I had Bridgestone Dueler A/Ts before (different truck) and they were GREAT. Supposedly there was no A/T tire that fit the Path when I replaced prior tires .. so went with the H/Ts. I'm thinking that's it .. and thinking also of how many miles I'll put on these H/Ts this Spring/Summer/Fall so I can get new tires(!).

01 SE/Man Trans. Dueler HT's with 17k miles on them. The rear end in this car loves to slide out. Even today, little snow .. being extra careful, the back end can't wait to get a better view. Is it me (I know, leaving myself wide open), tires .. car? I don't have a lot of experience with the Path. Thanks for your thoughts, suggestions.
-
Have a 01 Path. Is it me or does this car not like wind at highway speeds? Car control seems more susceptible to wind than other SUVs I've owned or driven. Funny as the thing seems smaller/more hunkered down than most. Also, any chance that silly rear window spoiler comes into play at higher speeds (into play in a way you don't want it to)?
-
Update. Dealer inspected rear bushings/suspension and felt everything was well within specs. They did note the need for an alignment and the greater need for balancing. I can't say I noticed a balance problem (with DC streets and that car you sort of assume the bouncing is not you) but perhaps at high speeds, with a little crosswind thrown in, the balancing issue can become pronounced. And at that point .. the we're leaving stable flight sensation might kick in. We'll see. It's spooky.
-
Thanks all. Sounds like I've entered plowed territory. It's a 2001SE, man trans with 40k miles. I don't really offroad .. just do the DC roads and highway thing. That said .. I guess I'm in the bushing area? I'm surprised .. when I got this to replace my Ford Explorer Sport (float city - basically anchors away) I thought my bushing problems were behind me. I'll have the dealer check it out. If this additional info mods your answer or you can narrow it down, I'd appreciate it. And, yes, these forums are super.

Passing through 65 notice a drifting, almost floating sensation. Like the thing wants to dance. On its own. Any similar observations. Very similar to when you pass through a bow wave when passing a truck. Over 65??? Jersey Turnpike .. I'm literally just trying to keep up with traffic! Thanks.

Thanks to those who posted. This time SES light was due to 2 timing solenoids failing (yup, 2) .. but they were covered under the post 36k warranty for engine/trannie repairs. Thankfully. No word yet on where the oil went. I'm thinking the previous repair had something to do with it (changed Nissan dealers for this repair). Do SES lights keep appearing on these cars? I suppose if the repairs are covered under warranty I'll keep getting them fixed. Thanks again.
