  1. There's a shock discussion thread already in progress somewhere around here...stock length Ranchos are 5118's, I used 5112's with about 4" of lift with good results.

Basically, yes. You could also go buy a Trailmaster 4" lift kit, which drops the front diff and torsion bars down 4". The real limit on front end lift is the CV axles. You cannot lift it more than around 3 inches max without maxing out the angles on the CV's and potentially ruining them every time you go wheeling. I've replaced at least 4 trashed CV's by now, so I can say this with some authority. ;)

See above. The rear can be lifted much higher than the front can, so take caution with the 5" idea. ;)

Awesome! Thanks for all the help!

  2. Yes, if the t-bars are adjusted properly. They may need to be reindexed though, due to age.

Hey 88, i'm going to be heading to a couple u pull it yards this weekend to get some jgc coils. I"m wondering, what new shocks should i get to accommodate the lift the new coil springs are going to give? Also, is cranking the torsion bars the only way to get a front end lift?

I'm thinking about going with the JGC coil lift, and getting some coil spacers, which should give about a 5" lift, but what should i do about the front end? Do you recommend me only going with the JGC coil lift, cranking the torsion bars and getting a body lift to help with my oversize tires and clearance?

    Any input helps! Thanks alot!

  3. Actually the tick, tick noise is not all that loud unless you accelerate hard! It also seems to get quiet after the engine warms up a good bit. I think you may have a cracked exhaust manifold! Is it always loud? Blaring noise when you accelerate? Same sound when engine is first cranked and after its been running a while, or does it change at all?

As far as what to drill, you will have to find which studs are broke when removing your manifolds!

I know I've got at least two broken studs that I can see, no telling how many after I get to removing the manifolds!!

I'm really not looking foward to that job, but you can bet your a$$ I'll be going back on with thorleys!

This may help a bit! http://npora.ipbhost.com//index.php?showto...;hl=300zx+studs

Well... if its in neutral, and i'm just coasting, its not too loud, but if i downshift, or accelerate hard... it gets loud as hell. clicking... after driving a while, it doesn't seem to really get any quieter, it is pretty much always, insanely loud. (minus coasting)

i was told i'll have to pull the engine to get the manifolds out. is that true? and looking on ebay, they have new manifolds for somewhat of a decent price, would it be wise to buy those, and try and replace them? ive got my chiltons, but i'm definitely no mechanic. haha

  4. Oh crap... (all estimates are for both sides)

    Local Japanese Auto:

$850.00 (for both sides) + extra labor for broken studs

Gregs japanes auto (japanese auto chain in WA)

$1200 + labor for broken studs

    Local muffler/exhausts shop

    $560 + $50/h for broken studs

    Dealership.. (lol)

$1406.00 includes 2 broken bolts... after that $72.00 a bolt..

I HATE LIVING ON THE WEST COAST!

Oh and I will be attempting my own exhaust manifolds now... (during xmas break :( )

Yeah!!! it is horribly expensive!!! i've just kind of ignored it for a while, but now that winters coming, and its cold... my windows aren't down as much, and my heater is on.... wooooooo, does it smell like exhaust.... i really don't know what to do. and passing out, doesn't sound too fun. haha. plus, the looks i get when i drive by aren't funny to me anymore....

  5. Yeah, I had the pleasure to drill and helicoil three of mine on the driver's side this Monday. What a PITA!! The stinkin broken studs just refused to come out! Oh well, a few hours and a LOT of swearing and it's all done. SOOO nice not to have that ticking noise. Get in there and do it yourself. You'll feel better after your done... a real sense of acomplishment. Good luck and have fun. Oh yeah, beer helps :sly:

So, i don't really even know where to start, to try to explain my exhaust manifold problem. My car is soooo ridiculously loud. and at first, i didn't mind too much, but now its starting to get annoying, and i was wondering if your ticking problem was very loud?.. I know that my problem is the Exhaust manifold, but could it be bigger? and, how would i go about finding what to drill out? If you have no idea! thats totally fine, i really didn't know who to ask or where to start.

    Thanks!

  6. So.. The idea is the solenoid is getting enough juice to partially work? but not enough to fully work... You know at one point they had an after market alarm hooked up and it might have had an inhibitor relay... I wonder if when they took the alarm out they messed something up with the ignition wires.. I suppose I should take a gander under the dash and around the steering column.. I might find some poorly spliced ignition wires..

So i'm wondering.... does your pathy start like it should now? Mine had the exact same problem, and i'm in the process between school, work and getting the funds to getting my old one out, that now click, click, clicks.... and doesn't start anymore, and getting a new one in. SO i'm hoping i don't have a bigger problem then just the starter?

  7. I had the same problem. It just recently stopped randomly. I got my starter/batt/alt all checked after I changed my alt and the guy said everything seems to be good but I dont belive him since my S*** WASNT STARTING CORRECTLY! I have been told a few times that it could be my batt. My alt was overcharging apperently and the day I changed it the batt was like BLOWING up, it was expanding which was kinda scary. Ever since I changed the alt the batt hasnt done anything.

I am gonna change out my batt here soon and see if everything goes well.

I was at Checker today, because my pathy was doing the same thing.... 3 clicks, then a start... or 20 clicks, and a start....when i asked him to check my starter, he said their little "checker machine thing" would say it is completely fine if it starts.... the starter just has a dead spot... will work sometimes, and sometimes wont... and therefor, you need to have a new one put in. eventually it will just completely die.... tons of clicks, but no turnover.

  8. So i payed 800 bucks for my 87 pathy about 6 months ago. No good exhaust manifold (sounds like a rice burner), have changed the oil twice, and put a new sound system in it... and thats about it. I'm getting new tires for 'er in the next couple of weeks, and i figured... i may as well try and fix the gauges. (Fuel, Engine Temp, Oil) these are all non working.... I'm not really sure where to start, i have my chiltons and i will look through that, but i'm just wondering if there is a simple fix for these? Or what i should do? Any help would be awesome! thanks everybody! Also, forgive me if there is a forum topic on here already about this.... i looked, but didn't find anything. Thanks again!

  9. Ive been looking for a relatively cheap lift kit for my pathy. I dont want a body lift, but a suspension lift....I am not loaded,so cost is a factor, and i was wondering if anybody knew of a decently priced suspension lift kit, online, that i would install myself? 2 or 3 inch is plenty. Thanks for your help!
