You are having pre-ignition, and you want to stop it. Your engine is a VG, so it should be perfectly happy on 89 or even 87. If it happens regularly (not just when you occasionally jump on it at low engine speed), you have 2 choices. If 91 always fixes it, then use it. Or you can try to find the root cause. I noticed you are running 32 inch tires. The larger tire means there is more load on your engine unless you switched your differential ratio to make up for it. That could be a contributing factor. If you live in a high elevation, or especially hot area that would make it worse. If you have a manual and you tend to run the highest gear you can, without downshifting to accelerate, that could cause it. You could also have a bad knock sensor, or MAF sensor, or maybe clogged injectors.
I'm running 4.6's the tires turn fine, I don't live in a higher elevation & I'm in the South but not the Deep South, so its not too hot. I have an auto tranny, the injectors are clean & MAF sensor is good. Maybe its the knock sensor but you know I had this issue with the original engine as well... oh well.

I used to use 89 (for like 8 years) but since the price isn't that differnt right now I use 91. I notice that when I use 89 I have an odd knocking noise but when I use the 91 its not there. Any ideas guys on what this is (this was true of my old engine as well)?

Like Pezzy said with enough welding & skill anything could be done.
I say just go with the KMA bumper or put an ARB on it (yes it can be done theres just a little gap that can be covered up)

Dude, why did I just find this thread? LOL but trailboss keep up the good work and make us R50 owners proud!!
This is/was an older thread, so unless you did a search for it you wouldn't just "stumble across it"
-
dude, do you have beadlocks (if so thats effing awesome)?

I've been talking/trying to do this for a couple of months now (I just need to take a weekend & do it already) & its fairly straight forward. Ask Dan he did it with a Navara snorkel (which is what AC sells as Frontier snorkels).

Painted rocker panels the only way to go. Yeah for Herculiner!

I think I could have one built & installed for less than that (plus the shipping). But this is something I've been wanting to do for a while.

I think Adam (Fueler) uses BFG AT's if I'm not mistaken.

Yeah, sounds like his hubs are fried and a CV is too. Sorry man.
Don't worry, both of these are fairly easy fixes you can do at your own house/garage. I've done a CV on the trail & seen hubs done on trials as well (or at least quick fixes to the hubs).

I'm not in NOAS but I run around with a bunch of those guys (hell Richard & Rob live/play down the street from me). I know that theres a couple of people talking about going to URE the 2nd weekend in April... a bit soon for me. I don't want to have to deal with all of the Jeeps, Toyotas, Zuks, etc, etc. I'll wait a month or so before I try to go nuts.
BTW I'm here in NC as well.

Nope my 87 was my first (well behind my bronco II that i had for 5 days and totaled) which I still have..I think I was a Junior in HS though but it may have been my sophomore year that I got it....All I know is I've had it 9 years now
and Welcome!
I will have had my R50 for 9 years come this June & welcome to the madhouse Tosh

for the money i'd get the BFG KM2s or SSwamper TSL Radials. at least they work in the (real) mud, unlike the BFG ATs.
I've run the hell outta my BFG MT's in some nasty, nasty stuff & been fine. The KM2's are a whole lot of badassness though...

Don't count me out, b*tches!
You were counted as one of the "couple of other R50's interested"

I had a Pro Comp MT blow-out on me going 65 mph on the interstate with only about 20K on them. The tread ripped off by itself & then the tire blew. It tore-up my front bumper & ripped off my sideview mirror (I also drove on the completely flat tire for like 3 or 4 miles until I could get to a decent neighborhood to change it-toughest rims I've ever seen)Company said that "they were have some trouble with the MT's & Xtreme Allterrains," yeah I'd say so.
Heres the link to the write-up on it

Let me know when you all decide to go. If I don't have school I would love to go on a trip. I am outside of Charlotte.
Shoot man (yeah I have to watch my language for a bit...), I forgot you're here in NC! I know there's a group going the 2nd week in April but I'll be honets it'll be completely packed for like the 1st 4 or 5 weeks. I was thinking of getting something going like mid May (just like a little day trip or something). I've got a couple of other R50's interested & a couple of modded Xterras aboard so far (only like about 4 or 5 at this point).

Do you happen to know if the strut bearings from AC to fit a 96 are OEM since everyone seems to want to stay away from anything else?
You mean the strut otwer mount? If so then I don't know if AC's is OEM, sorry
What's in your ash tray?
