  1. Thanks to all for the tips and suggestions. I don't have deep pockets for sure. Just want to get the thing roadworthy again and give it to my future son-in-law so that he can have fun with it.
  2. Would like to hear more about the V-8 and Vortec Options. I assume the transmission and drive axles would be incompatible? Fill me in?
  3. I have not visited the forum in awhile. Got the 88 out on the highway today and noticed the lifter ticking sound getting worse. Next thing I knew the engine quit entirely and I was able to get it off the highway. Oil is everywhere and I am afraid of the inevitable. Odometer reading is 289K and the lifters were newly installed about a 18 months ago. This vehicle barely gets 2500 miles on it a year and I've got more in it than it's worth. 5 speed manual transmission and the 4WD works great as far as I can tell. Need suggestions on which way to go. I think it's a cool car but I'm not interested in making this an endless money pit. Thanks for the suggestions.
  4. 1988 WD 21 engine blown. Now what?

Decide if to you the truck is worth keeping. If it is then start looking at options such as, an engine rebuild and new or used engine replacements. If not then decide if you want to sell it whole to a private buyer or wrecking yard or possibly part it out.

Thanks for the tips. 5 speed manual transmission that works great. Body has a few rust spots but nothing major. 289K on the odometer so I think the engine probably was about to expire anyway. Just changed the lifters in it about a year ago. New shocks and fuel pump, power steering pump. Probably not worth spending the money on to get a replacement motor.

  5. Thanks for the advice fellas. The grunge is pretty thick and needs something effective for removal so that I can see what needs to be replaced under there. I'm sure everything in the undercarriage area is original with the exception of the muffler and tail pipe.
  6. You guys are awesome and I am most appreciative of the suggestions. No doubt I came to the right place for this project. Thanks for the tips and encouragement!
  7. Anyone know about the effectiveness of Kerosene to degrease the undercarriage, motor compartment of a high mileage vehicle? What is the best, yet economical degreaser to cut the crap so to speak?
  8. I recently purchased a 1988 Pathfinder SE with 5 spd. manual transmission and 4 wheel drive. Power windows, brakes, locks, with a sunroof. High mileage 270K and the body is in really good condition. I have had to replace the hatchback and rear glass strut supports. Motor has new rebuilt heads and lifters. Interior is decent, needs driver and passenger door panel repairs, along with the seats. Front half of carpet needs replacement. So far, finding parts is not an issue until today. I purchased this vehicle with only one key (ignition) and it does not operate the door locks. Having said that, trying to find replacement door lock cylinders has been a major research project and thus far unsucessful with regard to finding door lock cylinders. The only thing close to year model (1988) is a Sentra and would like to know if a Sentra door lock cylinder would work on the pathfinder. Anybody know? I would also be appreciative of any tips for aftermarket parts suppliers and or manuals (besides Haynes) Thanks for the help. Looking forward to this project........I think? T.M.
