  1. I found the problem, the timing belt is the wrong size. Side by side with the original its about 1/4 inch too big. A good warning to cheapskates, its driven me crazy for two days. Very relieved.
  2. Thanks precise 1. Been on the thread and it seems to assume that you are starting from the right place. Everything is out of whack on my pathy. I have just been sticking a dowel into no1 and I m just off by at least 1 tooth. My aim is to count the 40 teeth between cams and 43 to mark on the crank gear - If its all balanced will that be ok? I will try again in the morning. My brain cant take this. Cheerio!
  3. Sorry the question. how do I find tdc on the crank? without marks?
  4. I am going crazy here, so thanks for any advice: OK... my harmonic balancer/crank pulley has no TDC mark, the key seems to be about 15 degrees off pointing to the passenger side at what I think is TDC - I measured TDC by aligning the cam marks and checking that No. 1 was as high as possible. The problem is the cams might be off (actually I am sure they are off by 1 tooth) Please help! Jim
  5. Congradulations. They are terrific cars. Ive had 4runners (narrower wheelbase and mediocre engine) and now Im selling my 96 tacoma because my Pathy does it all. Sounds like you are getting a deal. I am new here but have found everyone really helpfull so you started at the right place. Dont worry too much about rust, where you are it shouldnt be too much of an issue. Ive discovered a lot of finiky things to be aware of, first up - on manual transmissions the oil levels are rarely correct. Check the Lube specifications on this website, the oil levels are low from factory. The easiest way to fill is through the shift lever in the cabin. Yep. These are really great vehicles. Good luck.
  6. Welcome - Im new here too. I have a set of heads I was about to put on craigslist, but if you want them very very cheap we can do a deal. Where are you in Colorado, Im in Eagle.
  7. Dan, Im new to the Nissan world and just stripped the top end off my VG30, its a lot easier than you think. You should do it yourself and if anything goes wrong you can go to the mechanic. IF you do it yourself you could take the money you have saved and invest in the porting of the heads, new cams/reground cams and cold air intake - you may have change left over for headers(hopefully). I even have a set of gaskets you can have, if I can find them. The advantages are better mileage and more power. Everyone here is super helpfull and can keep you pointed in the right direction. Two things that saved me were photographing everything I did and keeping all the bolts pierced through cardboard in order with instructions I wrote on each piece. All the best
  8. I guess that the market is a bit small to invest a lot of money into for a small return from the few dozen they would sell. Never the less I quite like mine and love the convienience and I was suprised when everything lined up. Now I just need to get the engine running right.
  9. Is there a way to load pictures without a photobucket account? I have been looking... Coolkatz I quite agree with your review, 200 to 350 for a pipe? I can face $50, or spending a bit more to make my own but without a shroud its kind of pointless - thats my next project. Where did you mount/aim yours?
  10. Yep, I think a shroud should help though. Just trying to sort out the picture thing.
  11. This is my first post here so if its in the wrong place, ive insulted anyone or even repeated something hopefully the moderators will move this. So Hello everyone. In the middle of summer I aquired a non running 92 pathfinder from a neighbour who started it as a project and just couldnt get it going. After spending my free time fixing someone elses problems I did manage to get it going but the engine sounded like a bag of hammers being thrown down an elevator shaft. One of the most irritating problems was the intake which seemed to have more tiny splits and holes than swiss cheese. In the end it was more tape than intake. While looking for a replacement part I came across INSYS-USA intakes on Ebay. Less than $50 delivered, so I looked them up and the reviews were acceptable, after all it was $50 and used replacement parts run around $25 or more without an airtight guarentee. After all the rubber at this age could be perishing or split. So I just took a chance. The Good Shipping was quick (3 days to the Rockies) and it was packed well. You can see from the pictures that it was cosmetically quite nice looking as a kit and have everything you need. The alloy pipe is smooth and well finished with a dropped flair to tilt the filter down (although I did not use this and may cut it down. The alloy pipe does not feel luxuriously thick, but is sturdy and wont flex under hand strength. The welds are acceptable, without pin holes and seem even enough. The (im guessing here) silicon end pieces are chunky and secure. The filter is generic - A good inspection showed no pin holes or gaps or splits. How well does it filter? I have no way of knowing and I wont even hazard a guess. Im going to use it for now. The Bad and The Ugly The coupling between the MAF sensor and silicon was not to the same quality as the rest of the kit. For one it was slightly warped and was not flush. The drilled holes did not quite line up and had a lot of swarf - less than 5 minutes with some sand paper sorted that out (see pix). The real problem was how warped the base plate was, I had no option but to make a gasket out of cardboard and paste - cork gasket material would be much better but I was out. I think with the thin alloy the heat from the welding buckled the plate, to include a gasket would have been a wise decision for INSYS to have made, but no. Never the less it was only $45 dollars delivered and for less than 20 cents of sealent and cardbord I can live with it. The Universal Mounting Kit - its just a couple of strips of aluminium with a few holes drilled that you bend and twist to get it to fit. Surprisingly it works very well, just looks a bit flimsy. Installing: It took me less than 45 minutes to remove the old intake, sand the coupling, make the gasket, assemble and install. It fits perfectly and looks good. Does it work? Well it works for me. My Pathy no longer surges, stalls and reves all over the place so for me it was money well spent. Does it add horses? My truck is still running badly so I dont have a difinitive answer for you but it comes without a shroud so I can only assume it will suck in hot air from the engine bay. In addition the main pipe is aluminium and will no doubt act as a heat sink, but these are small things easily fixable with a bit of heat tape, alloy plate and a few hours of work. Personally I love it. Now for headers.
  12. Thanks Ahardbody - the sevice manual is saving me. I believe my o2 sensor is out seems to be connected but no flashing lights on the diagnostic and no responce... All the vacuume hoses were set up wrong, they were also torn, the accordian thing was cracked in even more places and is now a bundle of tape, the throttle body gasket was torn, the TPS was mis aligned and that was this morning before work. Lots of fun ahead it seems. Oh and it sounds like a spun bearind somewhere. I will get there. Thank you everyone again
  13. Thanks for all the encouragement. Its very welcoming here. Its getting late so Ive had to stop tinkering, however first the good news -the rubber accordion that sits past the MAF has a large split and two cracks that I sealed with Shoe goo (all I had) and replaced the vacuum tubes with the window washer hose - and it runs much better. But still hot and rich with surges and an awful idle, so over the next week Im going to double check the nock sensor, fuel pressure, maf etc. But this was always going to be a bit of a struggle - after all its someone else's nightmare. On the positive side due to the cracks I think its time for a brand new cold air intake! I did check the timing belt by counting teeth, but it may have been off tdc as the pulley/balancer may have been reassembled incorrectly. on top of that its a japanese engine so there may be some compatibility issues there... I will do a write up with pictures later. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnwIIKnWJtg
  14. Thank you! really stoked. Just got the engine turning over - sounds like a bag of wrenches thrown down an elevator shaft. BUT it runs... vacuum leak and timing I presume. its alive!
  15. Just bought a 1993 xe from a neighbor who managed to drive himself crazy with an engine swap. My neighbor bought a Japanese Domestic Motor and spent two years trying to get it started, couldnt get it running right and so he sold it to me because I was always around helping (his wifes threat of divorce was his inspiration). I have next to zero off road experience but I hope to build this car up with its former owner - all advice will be very greatly appreciated.
