1999.5 Pathfinder LE, wife's car, 80K on 9/1/06. Not happy with ride. Has been very dependable. Suspension is lousy. Rear bottoms out on slightest dip. Front not much better. Loose/rusted exhaust parts like shields flapping and muffler shell is peeling. Wife wants a new car but think she will change mind if I can fix the ride.

  1. Thanks to you and Simon for pointing in the proper direction. Some dumb question or two. I can hear the fuel pump buzz for about 4-5 secs before shutting off, however, I couldn't feel this pusling of fuel lines when cracking the car. Probably because I don't know where to check for pulsing. I thought the fuel rails running along the back wall but now am not sure. Can someone enlighten me. I pulled a plug after cranking, they were dry and did get a spark. I looked at the dist cap and it looks in shape as do the wires. Wiped off slight oxidation on contact points of cap. Thought the rotor looked ok, too. Now to figure where to go from here. Strong spark or not. How to do I determine that? fuel pressure high enough? Thanks.
  2. Thanks, Pezzy but no go. I just replaced the fuel pump relay and it stll won't start. I guess I will try to replace fuel filter and see if that tells me anythng. The gas tank is full so I think I got to figure out how much gas I'm willng to spill on the driveway. I thought I read somewhere that it's best to change the filter on a low tank. Wish me luck. Any ideas of what to check or replace next? Thanks.
  3. Wife's truck in the driveway and it won't start. Haven't done much more than routinely maintenance oil/filter,air filter, brakes, & rear shocks. Nothing around the fuel system. Last week wife ran a few errands and on her third stop the car won't start. The engine turns over but won't start. It was during a rain storm so I suspected something got wet as the car finally started after 5 tries later (in a 3-4 min span). Two days later same sort of thing; after a few errands and car won't start the finally it does after 5-6 tries it fires up and all is fine. Well today it does NOT start but luckily she's in the driveway and I'm trying to figure out how to diagnose the problem. Unrelated to this incident is the engine light has come on and off for the last year. Codes P0325 - Knock Sensor, Bank 1, and P0158 - Rear O2S, Bank 2. Needless to say I haven't done a thing to fix that either. So could this at all be related? She's been running the gas tank low the last two times before filling. Since I never changed the fuel filter I figure that's would be a good place to start. I'll see if that tells me anything. Any thoughts on what else to check would be greatly apprecated. Thanks.
  4. vengeful or whomever knows, Two question on installation. As I said it's been a while since I did my last shock change. The new shock comes compressed with a tie. I'm suppose to leave it compressed during installation, right? Now if the mounts don't line up with the height of the compressed shock am I suppose to lower the jack or place a jackstand under there to position it correctly? The new shocks didn't come with new bolts/washers. Is it ok to reuse them or buy new ones? Thanks.
  5. I can't seem to find a free version of a .rar extraction program and don't want to fork over $30-40 for a copy. Anyone know of a free version? Thanks
  6. I'm planning on installing my rear shocks this weekend. Wondered if someone had instructions on how to do. I didn't find any detail instructions in techinfo guide for rear shock replacement. I've done shocks before but was looking for anything that may help me avoid something stupid. Thanks.
  7. Thanks for the warm welcome. Now for some newbie type questions. I just realized this forum is named "off-road" and my wife hasn't shown any interest in starting, so am I still welcome to post here? Assuming I am, shall I continue to ask questions on this particular thread regarding suspension and move to the other thread when I have a different topic to discuss? Here's are a few more questions I wanted to pose. rear shock replacements - any recommendations; supplier I use carries KYB GR-2 & Gas-a-just; again not doing any off-road Does a service repair manual on CD exist? I noticed online auction (don't know if I can use the Ebay) had some listed for people in the UK). I have one for my other car and find it better than hardcopy. I bought a Haynes manual but not real happy with its content. Thanks again.
  8. Hello everyone. Finally, made an effort to find a forum for the wife's 1999.5 Pathfinder LE (no off-road). It's been a dependable truck for the longest time but now that it's got 80K miles little things are getting annoying and wife wants a new car/truck. I think this one got many more years to it as long as I can fix some of the problems Right now I'd like to tell you about the suspension to see if anyone can direct me to the proper answer. The rear suspension is lousy. It bottoms out when going over even the smallest size bump/pothole. If you put the slightest weight on the back like a 2 adults it seems like the rear is close to the wheels. The front also is loose. When you hit a bump if making a turn, it seems the car shifts to one side or other. The 1999.5 was the first model where the changed the body style/engine and wonder if this is a known problem. Am thinking Nissan didn't do a good job designing the suspension when this model arrived. Anyone have any experience with this problem? Thanks in advance.
