  1. OK, I've got a dead cluster in my 97. The speedometer reads 0 at all times, and the odometer moves up 1 mile every couple hundred. Seems like the little motor that drives it from within is dead. So I looked online for a new one, but I can only find 98+ ones that have the digital odometer... Is the harness the same for these, or do I need to find a 96-97 analog one somewhere? The analog WOULD have the advantage that I could roll the miles back to what my broken one says so I can continue from there, where the digital one would be stuck wherever it is when I get it.

What do you guys think? Digital possible in my 97?

  2. I'm partial to blue. I once saw a really nice late-model R50 in a fantastic sparkly blue color that was so nice to look at, I followed it on the freeway for a few miles. It was a shade darker than WRX/STi blue. :)

I see one every night in NJ on Rt295, I get on at exit 32 and I normally see it somewhere off in the far right lane... and I tend to stick around him all the way down till I get off at exit 24, and he keeps on going. I've also noticed several Chilkoots around here lately :\

  3. I havent done anything behind there... And a family friend of ours is a local mechanic, so he plugged his little computer thing in under the steering wheel and me and him drove around the block, and the engine RPM and MPH were shown just fine on that... so it cant be the VSS...

One day I'm just cruising down the highway and it started bouncing, and was dead. Instrument clusters are something that seem to have an interesting legality on, you can buy them used, but of course they'll have the wrong milage... maybe you'er supposed to spin it till it hits what you were at?

Anyway, how would I go about checking the cables that go back there? How do I remove the existing cluster, etc... I'll make it my Friday project.

  4. Well, speedometers and odometers are nice things to have working anyway... I hate when I'm driving down a dark road at night, I'm the only one on it, and my radar detectors screaming about the cop one block down the road, and I have no idea how fast I'm going. Plus, I like to know distances between places sometimes, and I cant find that out too easily without an odometer, can I?

  5. OK guys. My inspection is up fairly soon, theres two ways I can do this. I can have a nicely placed Benjamin somewhere near the front when my mechanic does his inspection... OR I can start fixing things.

My speedometer stays around 0MPH most of the time, when I'm going 90 or so, it bounces up to 30 every once in a while. The speed sensor shows the speed fine when connected to a computer.

The odometer has moved up about 60-70 miles in the last 5 months or so. Obviously, if I try to go through inspection and they catch this, I'm going to have quite the problem.

Basically, I need to replace the entire cluster, BUT I have the analog odometer, and can only find digital ones... Theres no way to connect that is there? I've got to fix like only two things to pass inspection, which is the speedometer/odometer, and the airbag light, then I'm legal again.

So for swaping this for a new one, what am I looking at here? I've got a 97 XE and can only find 98+ ones that want digital odometers :\

When I first met you, didnt realize... I cant forget you, or your suprise. You introduced me to my mind, and left me wanting you and your kind.

...the world wouldnt be the same without some sweet leaf.

Its when I do that that my engine looks like that. BUT I only do stuff like that every few months.... besides, the bottom of the box is there, and I've still got the box and filter, so I can just drop it back on and bolt it in.

So far its worked fine, but it definitely gets noticed by the ricers, and next thing you know theres someone with a fart can revving behind you...

  8. You CAN get the MAF housing there for liek $15.

ANYWAY... sam convinced me to install tonight, so its complete!

My dad gave me his metric tool set, so now I can also tighten that alternator belt!

I left the bottom of the airbox there for now, since its dark as hell out, I'll remove that later.

Drove about 50 miles on it tonight to test it out, it sounds so &^%*@$# nice.

  9. OK, so I stop in pepboys, and I screw around for like an hour looking at different combinations of stuff I can use to make this work... My friend whos the manager there comes over and is like "look, I read your post and its completely retarded, just use this"... he hands me a plate that bolts on where the airbox does, and the cone connects to that. All that worrying about sawing and @!*% was for nothing.

  10. Tonight I'm stopping by Pepboys to see what they have along the linse of something to just connect to the bolts where the airbox is. If all else fails, then Friday I'm rigging my own.

Oh, and about max. He may be reckless and insane, but at least hes willing to try the stuff that the rest of us look at and say "oh hell no" to.

  11. Yea, but that just needs to be cleaned off, as will the MAF anyway after doing this... So I'll have to do a bit more cleaning, big deal.

So back tot he inital post... can anyone see any reason why this wouldnt work? My only worry is that it will somehow slip off the little space left to hold on to. But as long as I'm on paved roads I dont think it would be much of a problem or long before I discover its not connected any more.

  12. My neighbor has been bugging me to do it for months now, I've got to SOMEHOW compete with his Ram with a new cold air intake and flowmaster exhaust.

So, theoretically this is going to work, my biggest concern now is plastic dust from sawing, and supporting the entire setup.
