See thats the thing, it could be locking up and I just cant tell because its one wheel. You may have a point there though because when it happens it feels like I am skidding a little bit but only in one corner, it feels like the front passengers one actually. I think this weekend i will see if I can get it on the hoist and see if that is the problem. Is there any proper way to clean the ABS sensor? maybe i DIY on the site or just a trick i should know of to make the most of it? Thanks Simon for the help. Cheers, Crash

Hi Everyone, I think I may have a problem with my brakes and I want to see if i can flush it out before winter hits. I have a 98 Chilkoot Edition. I noticed yesterday when I was driving in the rain and went to brake hard that it almost seemed as if one of my wheels was not braking properly, almost as if one was and the other wasn't. Then on the way into work this morning, the roads were still wet and a deer ran out in front of me and i had to stop abruptly and noticed the same thing, almost as if I was sliding on ice or something, i felt like i had no control of the truck anymore which is the complete opposite of the purpose for ABS. I know my brakes are in good working order as we had them all apart this past summer and replaced the front and rear as well as made sure everything was functioning properly mechanically and made sure there was lots of lube used to make sure nothing was going to seize up on me in the future Anyone have any idea where I should begin with this issue? I dont have allot of experience with ABS systems overall, i know the theory but not sure where some of the problems could lie. Thanks in Advance. Crash

R50 Caliper Bracket? - Interchangeable?
Crashoveride replied to Crashoveride's topic in 96-2004 R50 Pathfinders
DOH!, sorry the year is a '98. I went to our local parts store that is open on Sunday (Canadian Tire) and they said that they can get the "loaded" calipers and were only a few bucks more than the regular ones. The only down side is that there are none in stock anywhere in the area and it could take a week to order them. I think on Tuesday (Monday's a holiday here this week in Canada) I will try calling some of the parts places and see if they can get some in quicker or have them in stock. Thanks for the help guys, great to have a site like this for info. Cheers, Crash -
Hey All, I noticed a noise in my Pathy's front end this week was making a grinding noise when driving slow. So this weekend we took it into the garage and checked it out. Come to find out that one of the sliders on the caliper was seized solid, we took it off and tried everything under the sun to get it loose but it was not coming out. So now I am looking for a new caliper bracket, and of course we do this stuff once all the local parts stores are closed for the weekend, lol. My question is are there any other Nissans out there that might have an interchangeable bracket that will fit the R50's? If so what are they because it might my search a little easier. Thanks Everyone! Crash

Yeah that was going to be my next question ........ In everyones opinion what would be the best option to go with, replace the bushings or the whole control arm w/ bushings? I just bought the bolts today and then will see if i can find the control arm elsewhere online cheaper if need be. The dealership told me that they have tried to replace the bushings on those before and they find the new bushings don't fit in there tight and wear out easily and are a PITA to replace. That being said it is the dealership and they can make more money on the parts than the labor so its hard to say. If anyone has done these before please provide some insight. Thanks Again Everyone, Crash

I have the grinder Just need to order up the bolts to go with it Thanks again for the help.

nissandoms47, Thanks for the quick reply. I was just doing some looking around online and found some shop diagrams of the rear suspension and I saw that there was both upper and lower control arms and they were all just bushings and no ball joints, so it seems my local dealership also sells crack -thnkboutit- I am going to do this myself as I am a backyard mechanic and I want to learn more about it all, I come from a car background so the 4x4 world is all new to me. I guess I will have to weigh in about replacing just the bushings or the whole control arm. I assume it would be a good idea to get new bolts that hold the arm in as I know on some vehicles these may snap if they are rusted in there. Thanks again for the help. Crash

Hey All, I just got a call from my local Nissan Dealership and they said my rear ball joint is bad on my 98 Chilkoot and that they cant replace those and need to replace the whole control arm and ball joint. I called a few auto parts stores and they cant get them, does anyone know if this is a deal only part? They are asking $160 CDN for it plus install time. Or maybe a better question would be is this entirely true? Can i replace just the ball joint or do i really need to replace the whole control arm? Anything you guys can do to help answer the questions would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Crash

Oh yeah for sure, I would only do this if I was able to test the braking first to make sure it will perform the way I want it too. I think in the winter it would be the most advantage anyway, the summer it would help.
-
I think in the summer I might take it out and see if I like it any better with it off. I just feel that I have greater control if I decide if I want the brakes to lock or how hard I want them to brake.

Cant say I "don't" like it, just not used to it i guess.

Thats what I have noticed as well. This is the first vehicle I have owned that has ABS as I usually opt not to have it. You guys are right I think the ABS should be ok for now as long as its working on dry pavement. I just was very unsure about the sound because this is the first time I have heard a noise like this in the braking system and it didn't sound like a good one so I thought I would see what it was all about. Thanks for the help everyone, now I know what to look for in the future as well. Crash

I have noticed that it does this sound for the most part when its on slick or icy roads (Live in the Maritimes in Canada) I don't feel any pulsing on the pedal so I don't thing the rotors are warped but if I do change the bearings then I will do the rotor and pads as well, might as well do it all then while I have it all apart. Now I guess I know what the problem is just need to figure out what one and how hard it is to change these things, anyone ever have to go through this? Thanks allot for the help so far everyone. Cheers, Crash

Hey I am curious if anyone here may know what may be causing an issue that I have noticed with my brakes. I have noticed this a few times now when braking, when I push the pedal in it feels as if I am not getting all the braking that I should be and i hear the brakes making somewhat of a clicking or a ticking noise. I never get an ABS lights coming on or anything and have never had any issues before. I notice this every so often but its not constant. Just wondering what some peoples thoughts on this may be so I can look into it further. Cheers, Crash P.S - Its a 97 Chilkoot

Thanks again guys. Well the owner is getting rid of this I guess because he has found a new "toy", not sure what it is but I have known this guy for a few years from the car scene and its no doubt something nice so I think his sale is justified. Also from knowing this guy I know hes a bit anal when it comes to his stuff and usually take really good care of his stuff and things dont go neglected, it might have been by the previous owner before him but I am sure he would have been good to it, since hes gone and done the timing belt and cam seals as they should have been at aprox. 160,000k from what I have read. I am hoping to go see it this weekend and like you guys suggested I am going to get under that thing and do a good inspection of the body panels and the underside, I know from experience some of the major problem areas in vehicles from around here to check. Being from the east coast of Canada I see alot of vehicles that have faired well over the years and other than havent and I am hoping this is not too bad, if it needs a bit of body work in the next year or two and isnt too extensive then its no big deal really for a truck thats 8+ years old really. My main thing is I want a safe and reliable vehicle to drive year round that is going to last me as long as its taken care of and from my research this seems to be one of those vehicles, its just picking out the right one and well there are not many for sale around these areas and anyone that has them are holding on to them so theres something to be said rigt there I think Any more comments or observations please keep them coming, I really appreciate all the feed back I have been getting so far and I am sure we are set on getting one of these things just not sure what one now, lol.

Hey guys, Wow i really appreciate all the feedback from everyone. I knew the pictures of the underside would concern everyone because it concerns me as well. The problem is the truck is a few hours away and I havent been able to get to it to test drive and have a closer inspection, but I had the guy take those pics lastnight to see if its worth the drive to look at it. I am not sure the whole history of the truck, i know it was purchased by this guy from the dealer on Sept. 05 and hes owened it since then so I am assuming it was traded in for a newer one. I am told there are "usual" rust area on these things in the rear quarters and fenders, as well as the chrome bumpers if they have them. This looks to be ok on the outside from the pics but I am not sure if the underside is just surface rust or if its more than that but its obviously not been undercoated. I am BTW on the East Coast in Canada and well they love the salt on the road's in the winter, lol. I have compared what he is asking for the going rate of them in this area and its about average if not a bit below average. we are looking to use this as a daily driver and plan on keeping it for a few years to drive as its more practial than my show car and winter beater, lol. The other option I have is a 96 SE and it has been undercoated so the body is in good condition but it has more miles on it as well as I know its been off road and its got quite afew rattles and squeeks plus its very dirty and is getting the rockers replaced right now so I am not sure if I would like that one or this one for the same price. vengeful - The Carbon Fiber did catch my eyes and well it will match my other cars hood and trunk very well, Well thanks again everyone for the input I think if I can get to see it this weekend and take some better pics and let you know what its like, but if its not too bad I think I might get it and have it undercoated and whatnot. Thanks Again Crash

Hey All Well this is my first post here and hopefully not my last I have been looking at getting an SUV for a daily driver and something more practial for me and the wife but I come from a Sport Compact Car Tuning background and new to the SUV/Truck world. Anyhow we have found a couple that are local to us but one in particular has caught our eye and I want to get an expert opinion from some of the members of this community as you guys would no doubt know better than anyone what I should be looking for and if this looks to be a sturdy rig. Here is the info and pics ................... 1998, automatic, 4X4, Cruise tilt, pwr Windows, Locks, ABS Black in color. 160 000 kms (In Canada) New 31 tires ( Jan 06), have stock 265's also but 85% worn. Just had new timing belt and all accessory belts replaced along with 2 cam seals and an oil change So whats everyones thoughts and opinions, not taking price into consideration as its going for somewhat of a good deal how does it look for the age of the vehicle? Should I or Shouldnt I? Thanks Everyone. Crash
