Great info guys, thanks! Now all I need is a warm(er) weekend. We've been bouncing between 15 degree F and nearly 70 the past 2 weeks...changing about every day. I'm going to wait to buy the speakers until I get the door panel off and make sure they are 6.5" -6.75". That's what they look like by the grillwork on the door.

Thanks for the info. That is probably what I'll do. Put in new speakers and run new wire, eliminate those dang tweeters up front! I was trying to avoid taking the door panels off for fear of tearing them up. So long as I can listen to Van Halen and ZZ Top, I'll be happy.

Since I don't have an owners manual and my Pathy now has an aftermarket Sony head unit, I could use your help. The head unit is nearly new but sounds like C R A P. I've read two different possible causes. 1. That there is an amp in either the drivers side door or in the side panel cargo area...or 2. Each speaker has an amp. That is if you have the Bose head unit (with no amp inside) and so when the Sony unit was added, the amp in the head unit boost the signal and then it gets boosted again at the original Bose amp. The resulting noise (notice I don't call it music) is close to the same sound you get if you tie cats tails together (not that I'd ever do that!). I've got a 1996 Pathfinder. I assume it is the base model as I don't see any badging of XE or SE, but it is a Rocky Mountain Edition. What were the radio options in 1996? I'm trying to gather all the info I can before I tear things apart. As always thanks for sharing. Steve

Even if you put $2000 in it, that is only about 6 months worth of payments. If you really like it, the put the money in, if not then cut your losses and go with a newer one. Just my $.02.

Hello All, I have a 1996 Pathfinder with a newer Sony aftermarket stereo. It isn't an expensive unit but still has a good number of features. My problem is the sound (I dare not call it music) coming out resembles a pair of cats hung by the tail. The small tweeters that are in the front windsheild support post just screech! I've ran the fade so that I have 80% of the sound coming out the back speakers (back doors) and even that doesn't cure the problem. I saw a post somewhere that said there may be an amp (in the drivers door), but I'm not sure. No original owners manual, so I'm not sure what stereo this thing had in it originally. My temptation is to find and cut the wires going to the tweeters and replace all 4 door speakers. I thought I'd ask if anyone had a better idea. Thanks in advance for any help. Steve

Thanks for the suggestions. If I find the magical "cheap parts place" I'll pass it along. I live in Southern Illinois and there aren't many junk yards with lots of foreign cars...much less Pathys.

I have a 96 Pathy with just few minor problems and was wondering if anyone had found a place other than EBay to locate used parts? I need: 1. The fan blower resistor so I have speeds beside #4. 2. The rear window defrost switch does not work, no positive click or movement, so I think it is the dash switch. 3. The cruise control switch that is on the steering wheel may be bad. The main dash CC switch lights up but it won't set. 4. The seat adjustment handle to adjust the pitch on the seat back is missing. My wife cut her finger on it and I heard about my POS truck all week. LOL Other than those minor things, this thing is in great shape. No hurry since it is 9 degrees out today and I don't have a garage. Thanks Steve

I don't know how long you've been running synthetic but have know cars with higher mileage to start leaking after the switch from dino oil to synthetics.

Hello All, Great Forum with lots of good people. I bought a 1996 Pathfinder SE last week. Overall, it seems to be in great shape. Strong engine and smooth tranny. It does however have a few minor things I'd like to get fixed. I'd appreciate any hints or advice you could give me. 1. Heater blower only works on 4... I've searched and it seems to be a common problem that can be repaired by replacing the resistor. My question...does it have to be off a 1996 Pathy or are their other Nissans that work? 2. Cuise control doesn't work...the master switch light comes on steady but when I press the set button on the steer wheel, it doesn't engage or light up. Not sure steps to trouble shoot or if this is a common problem. 3. Rear window defroster doesn't work and I get no light when I push the dash switch. This one isn't a big deal unless their is a fairly simple fix. 4. I have a "Rocky Mountain Edition". Does anyone know what equipment this included? I have front and rear brush guards, but I don't even know if that was part of the package. Thanks in advance for your help. Old Geek (Steve)
