Torque Converter Dying?

I've developed an odd problem that I can't find a solution for anywhere. After the engine is warmed up, I can go down the road on any terrain at almost any constant speed and the tranny will jolt or buck pretty hard. It's not shifting gears because it's not at a shift point and it happens at almost any speed. Sometimes instead of bucking, it will "slip" and go up about 400 rpms. Anyone else ever have this problem? I'm thinking that it's torque converter related, but don't know if it would be the converter itself or the controller. It's a 2wd 1998 automatic with 120k miles and I don't know that the fluid has ever been changed. The fluid is full and it doesn't look burned. :help: Is it time to trade it in? I've had no problems up until this point.

Thanks,

Garrett

I second the fluid service. might also want to have the filter changed. not too hard to do yourself... drop the pan (makes a HUGE mess) and change out the filter/gasket... then refill the fluid.

One common mistake when checking/filling tranny fluid is that a lot of people check it with the engine off. it must be done while running. also, after you add fluid set the parking break and shift between reverse and drive fairly quickly (just until you feel it shift gears) about 20 or so times. this will get the fluid warmed up and flowing thorugh the system. then re-check level and add as needed. then go for a 10-min or so drive and check one last time.

hope this helps, i'd hate to see a fellow member lose their pathy!

Thanks for the replies. I guess I'll get it serviced. Should I go for the flush or just fluid change? I've read that higher mileage transmissions die if you change the fluid. Is 123k too high to be changing it? It might have been changed before I bought it at 70k, but I don't know for sure.

Thanks,

Garrett

flush.

you really want to change the fluid in the Trq converter too. i can't remember if there is a dump valve on these trucks or not though.. otherwise it's a pita.. not sure if the flush at the dealer or lube place includes this or not..

the trannys' dieing is kind of a myth... it only happens if the change done improperly.. mostly lack of fluid at start up..
