I just bought a nissan pathfinder 2002 LE and I noticed a strang metalic noise after start up in cold temperature. The noise stop when the engine heat up...

I can't located the source but it's in the alternator area??? My first guest is the timing chain.... Is it possible that the timing chaine make some noise when it's really cold like this morning (-20 deg C)????

Thanks again!

It won't be the timing chain cuz you have a timing "belt". Does the frequency of the noise increase with accelerator increase or does it stay the same frequency even if RPM's are increased? Does it get louder with RPM increase or quieter or stay the same with RPM increase?

Hmm, that noise could be a multitude of things.

I will tell you, my friend had a 1997 Jeep that whenever he started it, there would be a weird metallic noise. All it was was the starter spinning, but it was abnormal

My truck has a bad A/C idler pulley that makes a really really annoying constant metallic noise. But then again, it's silent.

I honestly don't know, just throwing things out there.

I have a 98 and I started to hear this "strang metalic noise" around the fan shroud area last winter.

I had replaced the drive belts and idle pulley bearings and still hear this strange noise when the weather falls below 40F . I suspect it could be a defective cooling fan coupling or even the water pump.

Since my truck has only 50K miles and no other problem so I just park it indoor for now.
