Transfer case/Tranny temp

Can you get an accurate feel for how hot the tranny is by feeling the shifter for the transfer case.

The reason I'm asking is because I've gottin into the habit of checking it to see how hot it is from time to time. When I first got the truck it would get too hot to touch for very long, then after the tranny cooler it never gets that hot. While on the highway at 55-65 it gets down to reg. room temp. I figure that's probly from the air cooling it tho.

The only accurate way to tell how hot/cool your tranny or t-case is is to have a gauge. There should be a transmission temperature sensor already in place for your ATP light. You may be able to tap into that and wire up a gauge.
