tranny questions?

I have a 87 Pathfinder thats just started acting up.

Symptoms:

1) Doesn't down shift from 3rd to 2nd when climbing a hill, kinda intermittant and ineffective. manually shifts no problem.

2) put it in reverse and it jumps then stahls, I have to accelerate to get it to keep from dying, no other gear does this.

3) when slowing down and the auto shifts from 2nd to first the vehicle gets a vibration that rolls through it.

4) has to be started in neutral instead of park

It is an automatic 4x4 v6 with NO overdrive.

I pulled the pan of the tranny to put a new filter and gasket on it and in the bottom of the pan there was a little nut and a few aluminum shavings.

It's in perfect shape aside from the tranny, the motor, electrical (aside from the tranny) and body are flawless.

NEED HELP! :help:

OK, just to qualify myself, I have a manual 95, BUT from what I have read the signs of an auto tranny going AWOL is reverse acting funny or leaving entirely. Do you have an aftermarket tranny cooler ? Seems like the stock one clogs, and I dont know if it is heat or flow but it fubars the tranny. Definitely invest in one. Regardless, metal shavings are generally not good, and "a little nut" does nothing in the feel good category.... I'm sure some auto tranny whiz people will chime in, but from what I understand, if it is fubared, there is little you can do. I believe there are some tranny codes you might be able to read from the ecu. There is a sticky in the garage section about that. The "little nut" has me worried unless that is you ? :D Good luck Bud...

Unfortunantly the nut isn't me, I would guess it's the lock up on the torque convertor because of the wind down shimmy and the reverse works as long as I step on the accelerator hard to get it up to speed and don't try and idle it. Then reverse will work fine 1 out of 3 times.

I disconnected the sensor for the torque converter lock up and it works fine now. i'm going to replace the unit and wire in a toggle switch to fix the problem as well as be able to lock and unlock it electrically.
