RE4R01A - plastic ring in the pan

It does look familiar but I'm going off a vague memory from years ago when I first pulled the valve bodies apart. If I get some free time this today or this weekend I'll drop the pan and take a look for you. I'm still in the middle of disassembling the transmission.

Pulled the pan and found the same thing. It broke in 3 pieces. I just got to figure out where it came from for both our sakes. What kind of issues were you having?

Thanks for checking - it does look like a thrust washer of some sort. I was missing 2nd and OD, so that prompted me to pull the pan. My solenoid self check passed, but i wanted to see if I could spot something obvious before pulling the tranny.

I did an engine swap, after the beast sat for 2+ years (timing belt...). Before the swap, the tranny was slow to engage in drive when cold, then thunk, it went. After the engine swap, no more hesitation when cold, but I only had 1st and 3rd gears. I was hoping it was the solenoid pack, since I found some at a local pick and pull, but it looks like it may be deeper. Any chance this ring, or whatever caused it to break, could be related to my lack of 2nd and OD?

On more tidbit - when I pulled the tranny computer, and drove while I forgot it wasn't connected, the tranny started in second. I stopped and reconnected the computer and back to 1st and 3rd.

When I had a semi running motor, the transmission would kick down and up bucking but that could a whole slew of things which I had no time diagnosing at the time.

As for the broken bits, I highly doubt that could be the issue as the oil filter would prevent the pieces from being pumped into the internals.

When you did the engine swap, did you have issues lining up the torque converter and inputshaft on the oil pump?

I have not gone through the whole troubleshoot of the transmission yet, but when I do I'll let you know what I come up with. I'm still learning the intricacies of automatic transmissions.

try swapping out another TCU and see if that fixes it.

with the TCU disconnected, I think the transmission goes into "limp mode" which is that it starts in 2nd. I could be wrong about this so don't take my word for it.
