gheck engine light

I have a 99.5 Pathfinder with 180000km on it. I have had it for 9 months and the check engine light has been on since I got it. I had it scanned and it said the problem is in the emission control system. The guy at the shop said I need a new by pass cut off valve. Does anyone have any information on this. Is the part expensive, can I put it in myself. I have been having major problems with gas mileage. I fill up and only get about 220km. I dont know what that is in mpg, but it is not good. I travel 4 hours on the highway and I have to stop half way becuase I am out of gas. I thought my o2 sensor might me gone but that code did not show up. Someone also told me that my catalytic cobvertor might be clogged and casuing my gas using to be high. I am thinking about selling my truck and getting a new one but I dont want to sell it with the check engine light on. Other then the gas mileage, the truck runs great. Is there a way to make the light go out and keep it out? is there a fuse. Please help with any advice.

I wouldn't recomend pulling any lights just to sell it. Thats just bad Karma man. As for as gettting it to go out, and fixing the problem, if you pulled an emission code, check the EGR valve. Sometimes, all ya need to do is pull it off and clean it. The Cat converter is mostly like not the culprit, but not impossible. I have heard of the honeycomb insides deteriorating, but that was due to repeated fill ups of really bad gas. I's say play with the ERG valve and see what that gets ya. Good Luck.
