Engine swap, yes or no?

Hey everyone

 

I have a 1991 terrano R3M. I have been disenchanted with the engine and it's performance for quiet a while now and I am seriously thinking about doing some drastic mods. Now I have 2 options as I see it, either stick with the TD27 and hot it up a bit or see if s ZD30 from a R22 navara will slot in to my engine bay.

 

Option 1

I love my car to bits and it has never failed me, however I just feel the car could be so much more then what it currently is. The mods for he TD27 I am thinking about are;

 

A rebuild of the engine and turbo (maybe even high flowing the turbo)

An intercooler (preferably top mounted with an electric fan but I can be convinced into something better or cheaper)

A snorkel

An exhaust system

 

These mod will give the terrano a bit more up and go but will it just be trying to up a sub par engine.

 

Option 2

 

I try to source a ZD30 from somewhere (I haven't yet investigated this as I would like an answer as to whether it would fit before I start wasting my time sourcing one). I have a mechanic on hand and as I understand it, IF the engine will fit the major hurdle will be the electrical integration. My main question for this option is will it go in without any major hassle? Will it fit my current gearbox or will I have to source a new gearbox too, if it will fit the gearbox is the gearing still ok? Is the rev range the same or similar? Please don't hold back as I would like any and all information you have about such a swap, I am quiet interested in this swap now I have thought about it.

Stick with the TD27 and read up on the diesel mods. You get more power and retain the reliability from what I can tell. Look for stuff by KiwiPete and others that chime in with him.
