Electrical Short Behind the Dash

Recommended Posts

So I've got a weird short somewhere behind the dash board.

The multifunction turn signal switch had gone bad and I had assumed that was it. It was leaving the lights on and that sort of thing. Finally got around to replacing that.

So now what it does is if I try to use the electric window, or turn on the headlights, the dashboard voltmeter drops to zero, both relays in the fuse box start buzzing. The windows don't get enough voltage to go down, etc...

Checked all of the grounds. All good. Checked voltage on everything I could in the fuse box, and everything checks out. The battery is new and the under hood voltages are all good.

Best as I can figure is it's just a weird short somewhere under the dash.

So, I'm going to pull the dash out and look for it. While I'm doing that, the dash, which is all cracked could use some serious refurbishing, so I'll do that as well.

I've seen an article on the web that talks about removing the dash, and it doesn't look that bad.

Just wondered if anyone who has pulled the dash before had any advice?

Anything I should make sure I do while I have it pulled?

Anything I should definitely not do?

Thanks in advance for your help!
