Idle Issues And Broken Throttle Body

ok so my throttle stop screw, which for all of us is set at the factory NEVER MOVE IT, was screwed with. the screw is set at the factory so the TPS can be adjusted accordingly. if that screw gets moved, throw away the entire throttle body assembly, and get another. the TPS is sdjusted by resistance and feeler guages.

 

so i bought a new one, since i couldnt go over 30mph or shift gears or anything with the TPS thrown out. the local nissan dealer wanted 100 bucks just to try to fix it, and wouldnt guarantee they could.

 

95 bucks later i have a throttle body off a 99 se. what i dont understand, everything is the same, almost. there is this vacuum actuator on the side, and the tube where the egr hose connects is blocked off. i just took the new actuator off and unblocked the fitting. what is the difference? was anything changed between the 97 and 99, even though they have the same engine.

I would just make the new throttle body look like your old one and bolt it up! Any other differences should be fairly obvious. Sounds like the emission equipment might have changed between the years which is entirely possible.

 

Now the issue of the throttle stop screw. Usually one sets it so the vehicle ideals fine and the IAC is within working range and can hold idle. Then by disconnecting the battery for a bit, the TPS (throttle position sensor) should reset within the computer so it knows where 0% throttle is.

 

But now that I think about your symptoms, I would say your stock TP sensor wasn't working. Maybe try swapping those first and disconnect the battery for a bit?

my TPS got taken off, there for throwing off its measurement. and my battery died that night anyway, and it didnt change anything. and i am getting codes now for IAC, so i think i need to pull it out and clean it up.

 

i ended up just taking that jungle gym attached to the side off. what i still cant get at is, the fitting under the throttle body for the egr was plugged off, does anyone else have this setup. curiousity is just killin me.

Yea but i'm saying the actual sensor might have gone bad. A voltmeter will tell you pretty quickly if it is working or not.

 

The code for the IAC is probably because your throttle stop is not set properly and it's having trouble adjusting the idle air flow (out of range). Unfortunately you would probably need a computer to scan the ECM and see where the IAC is sitting (how much flow it lets through or not), then you use that to adjust the set screw.

 

Since you have a "new" throttle body, just adjust the throttle blade on your stock one so it looks like the new one. Check the wiring and plugs for the sensors as well.

 

Stuff like this should be cake for a dealer to diagnose.

figured out what it is. its called a throttle opener. when no vaccuum is applied, it presses on the throttle a little bit, opening it. once the engine is running, the vacuum pulls back on it and closes the throttle.

 

basically an automatic choke or sorts.
