Running RICH!

Hello fellow enthusiasts!

I have an 88 Pathy SE.

It runs rich enough to make a person gag if they're downwind of the tailpipe.

I've replaced the O2 sensor, the coolant/water temp sensor, changed fuel filter, checked the TB, etc..

Nothing fixed the problem.

Yesterday, I finally hauled the computer out from under the passenger seat and ran a diagnostic.

I got a code 11. Which means something is faulty with my CRANK ANGLE SENSOR.

Does this ring a bell with anyone?

Would this be causing the rich fuel mix?

Interesting I am waiting for someone to chime in on this also. Ever have you pathy not

start when you turn the key there is no click or anything then 5 minutes later it will start

I tried the clutch start cancel button no difference. When this happens to me very rarely it seems to kick the code 11 and I seem to be a tad rich too, hmm.

yeti firstly replace the crank angle sensor - that code is telling you theres something wrong

secondly check the resistance (ohms) across each injector. if one of the injectors has had it, it should give an odd reading. once you know what all the resistances are you should check they are in specification - one may be broken and letting too much fuel through.

your problem seems to be more like a starter/ignition problem ... if you do a search, there is a lot of information on correcting this by adding a simple relay into the mix...

BTW - a crank angle sensor problem will definately cause a rich running condition ... it is not something that is servicable either. It is part of the distributor and would have to be changed out as an entire unit ...

have you verifed and checked the timing after your general tune-up? if not, I would start with that, reset the ecu, and see how it runs ... if it comes up code 11 again, you will need to replace the distributor ...

  • 1 month later...

Put the ECU into mixture ratio feedback mode if you have not already. You should see that the ECU is switching to closed loop operation based on the simultaneous flashing of the red and green lights.

I had a smog problem caused by the ECU not getting into closed loop operation because of my cyl. head temp sensor was fried.

The mixture is controled by several inputs. Check the factory manual for the inputs. I forget off hand.

btw I have an intermittant crank angle fault code as well, doesn't seem to affect too much, but maybe I am just used to the crap mileage. Check to see that the crack sensor harness is not right on top of the plug wires.

I saw just the crank angle sensor PCB board on sale at one of the online parts places. You might need to "operate" to get the old cranck sensor off... look around is was only 65 bucks.. maybe worth a shot, Actually here, I remembered where:

www.net-parts-express.com

part# NI036449

Made by FACET

Site says:

"Crank Position Sensor

fits O.E. Dist #'s 22100-16E00

22100-16E03

CRANK ANGLE SNR"

Find the part number for your dist.. Hope this helps!
