5 Speed Manual Tran (Shifting?)

I have a five speed manual on my 2001 and was wondering if it was ok to start out in 2nd gear? I have always had a manual tranny but they have always been in compact cars so the shifting has always been short from one gear to the next….But on my Pathfinder I have noticed that shifting from 1st to 2nd is almost instant and sometimes jerky. So I have experimented with starting out in 2nd and shifting to 3d which the time between shifting is longer and smoother. (I use to do this in an old Bob truck we had) I always shift around 2500 rpms. So I was just wondering if starting out in 2nd will hurt my transmission?

I don't think it would hurt the transmission really, but it might cause a bit more wear on the clutch, since you would probably have to burn it a but more to get a smooth start. I also have a manual tranny, but I shift at ~3K rpms, so the short gearing doesn't really bother me ;)
