Impact2k1SE
Hi Guys, I had a ripped boot on my CV joint for my 2001 Pathy. I took the axle out, and am trying to disassemble it to put the new boots on. The service manual says to "press the spider off" - Now I don't have a press, anyone have any tricks for doing this? or does autozone have a press that they will let me use there in the store? Thanks!
denisb
Try clamping them in a vise and using the loose in the CV to jerk them off. If that doesn't work, you can use a plasti hammer or a peice of wood and a regular hammer taking care not to chip the CV, to "persuade it off. I had one of mine that came off by hand and the other one I almost had to break off. Hope this helps. Impact2k1SE
Thanks Denis, I definitly got one of the tight ones! Eventually i went down and borrowed a 5 ton 3 armed gear puller from Autozone. With that it was possible (though not ideal) to get the spider off the axel... The whole time i was thinking about having to get it back on... needless to say it was just as tough to get back on. I'm going to try and post some pics and all on how i did it, maybe save someone else some time.
